In the 1960s and 1970s, mathematical biologists Sir Robert M. May, E.C. Pielou, and others utilized difference equations as models of ecological and epidemiological phenomena. Since then, with or without applications, the mathematics of difference equations has evolved into a field unto itself. Difference equations with the maximum (or the minimum or the "rank-type") function were rigorously investigated from the mid-1990s into the 2000s, without any applications in mind. These equations often involved arguments varying from reciprocal terms with parameters in the numerators to other special functions. Recently, the authors of Analysis of a Model for Epilepsy: Application of a Max-Type Difference Equation to Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and their colleagues investigated the first known application of a "max-type" difference equation. Their equation is a phenomenological model of epileptic seizures. In this book, the authors expand on that research and present a more comprehensive development of mathematical, numerical, and biological results. Additionally, they describe the first documented instance of a novel dynamical behavior that they call rippled almost periodic behavior, which can be described as an unpredictable pseudo-periodic behavior. Features: Suitable for researchers in mathematical neuroscience and potentially as supplementary reading for postgraduate students Thoroughly researched and replete with references

Epileptic Seizures And The Eeg written by Andrea Varsavsky and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-19 with Medical categories.

A study of epilepsy from an engineering perspective, this volume begins by summarizing the physiology and the fundamental ideas behind the measurement, analysis and modeling of the epileptic brain. It introduces the EEG and provides an explanation of the type of brain activity likely to register in EEG measurements, offering an overview of how these EEG records are and have been analyzed in the past. The book focuses on the problem of seizure detection and surveys the physiologically based dynamic models of brain activity. Finally, it addresses the fundamental question: can seizures be predicted? Based on the authors' extensive research, the book concludes by exploring a range of future possibilities in seizure prediction.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that affects millions of patients worldwide and arises from the concurrent action of multiple pathophysiological processes. The power of mathematical analysis and computational modeling is increasingly utilized in basic and clinical epilepsy research to better understand the relative importance of the multi-faceted, seizure-related changes taking place in the brain during an epileptic seizure. This groundbreaking book is designed to synthesize the current ideas and future directions of the emerging discipline of computational epilepsy research. Chapters address relevant basic questions (e.g., neuronal gain control) as well as long-standing, critically important clinical challenges (e.g., seizure prediction). Computational Neuroscience in Epilepsy should be of high interest to a wide range of readers, including undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty working in the fields of basic or clinical neuroscience, epilepsy research, computational modeling and bioengineering. Covers a wide range of topics from molecular to seizure predictions and brain implants to control seizures Contributors are top experts at the forefront of computational epilepsy research Chapter contents are highly relevant to both basic and clinical epilepsy researchers

This project presents the performance analysis of Particle swarm optimization (PSO), hybrid PSO and Bayesian classifier to calculate the epileptic risk level from electroencephalogram (EEG) inputs. PSO is an optimization technique which is initialized with a population of random solutions and searches for optima by updating generations. PSO is initialized with a group of random particles (solutions) and then searches for optima by updating generations. Hybrid PSO differs from ordinary PSO by calculating inertia weight to avoid the local minima problem. Bayesian classifier works on the principle of Bayes’ rule in which it is the probability based theorem. The results of PSO, hybrid PSO and Bayesian classifier are calculated and their performance is analyzed using performance index, quality value, cost function and classification rate in calculating the epileptic risk level from EEG.

Status Epilepticus (SE) is a neurological emergency and has high morbidity and mortality. The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) recently updated their definition to specify that, “SE is a condition resulting either from the failure of the mechanisms responsible for seizure termination or from the initiation of mechanisms, which lead to abnormally, prolonged seizures.” Such phenomena can lead to long-term neurological complications due to neuronal death, glia, neurological injury, aberrant neuroplasticity, oxidative stress and inflammation, and alteration of neuronal networks. Depending upon the type and duration of SE, these mechanisms are quite variable. Therefore, in response to the updated definition of SE, novel avenues of research are required to address the specified involvement of the underlying mechanisms and pathophysiology resulting in the development of and outcomes from SE. Improving the basic science understanding of SE will facilitate essential clinical trials. One can envision such experiments to include device and compound-based technological interventions directed at aborting the seizure activity and improving clinical outcomes. Benzodiazepines remain one of the cornerstones of treatment, and studies are underway to study new delivery options, including intranasal, buccal, and intramuscular midazolam, in addition to rectal diazepam, with the goal of aborting the seizure activity outside the hospitals, as rapidly as possible. Approved and off-label anticonvulsants, such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, valproate, topiramate, levetiracetam, lacosamide, steroids, immunosuppressants, and neuroprotective compounds, have also shown some efficacy at treating SE. However, substantial challenges remain in optimally managing SE and minimizing the short- and long-term complications. Such difficulties can be overcome by innovative approaches targeting the underlying mechanisms of neuronal excitability, glia, neuronal death, neuroplasticity, oxidative stress, inflammation, and neuroinflammation.

Epileptic patients live with epilepsy-associated complications such as cognitive dysfunction, psychological discomfort, and sexual function decline, and are more likely to experience emotional and mental health issues problems, including depression and anxiety. Many antiepileptic drugs are found to have a role in aggravating psychiatric symptoms. Animal models, which inform translational questions about epilepsy comorbidities, are used to study the relationship between epilepsy and related comorbidities. The aim of this Research Topic was to highlight basic, clinical and interdisciplinary research involved in studying the disease and its comorbid effects. Various experimental models are used to understand the mechansims of disease and to discover newer antiepileptic drugs. These experimental models combines the input from behavioral, biochemical and molecular level including genetic.
