Excerpt from Anatomy for Conformity Conformity is a current social problem. This book is an effort to show how analysis of the problem can lead to experimental research, and how the conclusions obtained can yield general principles applicable to everyday problems. This volume grew out of what has been called the Conformity Project. The Conformity Project began in informal discussions among a number of its eventual participants. It grew into a formal proposal and became one of several projects supported by a grant from the Ford Foundation to the University of Michigan for encouragement of new work in the social sciences. Formal work started with an interdisciplinary seminar which had as its basic aim the development and testing of a theory to account for the behavior of individuals in groups in general, and conformity behavior in particular. An experimental phase began to develop toward the end of the first year, and by the beginning of the third year the project was almost entirely experimental in character. The original goal of the project was to achieve a synthesis of some of the social science approaches to common problems. The psychologist, the sociologist, and the anthropologist often deal independently with the same problem, and they do so in quite different terms. By choosing the problem of conformity and by working on this problem as a team it was hoped that a new approach to important social problems might emerge. This hope remained largely unfulfilled. What emerged was a simple basic formula which could be elaborated almost endlessly, and into which were fit a relatively small number of concepts. Excerpt from The Animal Kingdom, Vol. 4 of 4: Arranged in Conformity With Its Organization, Serving as a Foundation for the Natural History of Animals, and an Introduction to Comparative Anatomy; Insecta-Zoophytes The most alluring side of the science is first discussed, viz. That which belongs to the manners and economy of insects, and where there was the least room for originality. They enter more fully, how ever, into the other branch, viz. That which belongs to the amatomi cal, physiological, and technical parts of the work. As far as regards the general physiology and internal anatomy, they have done little more than bring together and combine the Observations of other naturalists who have attended to these branches but the external anatomy they have examined for themselves, through the whole class of insects. Here they are assuredly entitled to the praise of having thrown much new light upon the subject, particularly by pointing out and giving names to many parts never before noticed. Excerpt from The Composite Man as Comprehended in Fourteen Anatomical Impersonations About twenty-five years ago the author was an ardent stu dent of anatomy, and was ambitious to popularize the subject, believing that an intimate knowledge of the human organism would prove to be of practical service, not only to medical men, but to people generally, and with this end in view, for a number of years, he delivered a series of popular lectures on the structure of the human body, in a considerable number of communities adjacent to the city Of Chicago. The audi ences were always appreciative, but the task proved too ardu ous to be long continued, and the hope of popularizing the subject by means of lectures at least died out, until it seemed necessary of late years, for humanity's sake, to aid in unifying the medical thought of the times. Practical medicine has been split up into various special ties, each full Ofits own importance. Manual therapeutics has achieved a widespread appreciation of its own merits, and sug gestive therapeutics has grown to such substantial proportions as to clamor for universal recognition, while the old, time honored temple of medicine has industriously striven to meet the ever-changing and increasing wants of humanity to the best of its ability. Each means Of cure has its appropriate field Of Operation, and all possible remedial measures that have been found helpful in the healing of the sick are sorely needed in the great campaign of humanity against disease and premature decay. There should be no rivalry between the various'methods of cure, but, on the contrary, they should enjoy mutual appreciation and helpfulness. This desirablestate Of affairs can be attained only when the nature of man, both physical and spiritual, is better understood. SO long as one set of healers has a care merely for the physical part of the human being, ignoring, as far as possible, all consideration of his spiritual nature and necessities, and another set refuses to recognize the claims of man's material part, but hopes to rescue humanity from its aches and pains by purely psycho logical processes, sick humanity can have little hope Of per feet and permanent recovery. But when the dual nature Of man becomes universally recognized and the fact that, so far as his present existence is concerned, he is not a mere body nor a mere soul, but both, and that each acts and reacts upon the other in both health and disease, becomes universally appreciated, practical medicine, manual therapeutics and sug gestive therapeutics can sit down in friendly counsel with some hope of successfully solving the great problem of humanity's emancipation from the thralldom of sickness and suffering. Excerpt from Anatomy and Physiology Rendered Attractive: And the Laws of Health Made Plain, in Conversations Between a Physician and Families, and for General Reading The origin of this work may be briefly stated. Within the last ten years the author has been requested, at various times, to address assemblies, particularly Sabbath Schools and Lyceums, upon the subject treated in this book. The thought and study necessary to the preparation of these lectures, have impressed him with the belief that the numerous works on Anatomy and Physiology, designed for the use of schools and for popular reading, have been essentially deficient, inasmuch as reference is seldom made in them, to the proofs that stand out so prominently in every part and organ of the human body, of the wisdom and goodness of God in its formation. This, perhaps, should not be expected in purely scientific works upon these subjects, designed solely for the Student of Medicine; yet, even in these, an occasional reference to the abundant proofs of creative goodness, would not be out of place. But in works designed for popular instruction, such deficiency is certainly a defect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
