Giulio Andreotti nei primi anni Sessanta era stato avversario della formula di centrosinistra ed all’inizio dei Settanta era contrario ad ogni apertura al PCI. Ma a metà del decennio, per volontà di Aldo Moro, fu chiamato a guidare i governi che si avvalsero dell’astensione e poi del sostegno esterno del PCI. Fu scelto, in uno dei momenti più difficili della storia della Repubblica, come garante della «solidarietà nazionale» nei confronti degli alleati occidentali e verso il fronte interno più problematico, quello della Chiesa cattolica. Ed è su questo tema che, in prevalenza, le pagine di questo volume fermano la loro attenzione. L’interlocuzione a vari livelli con il mondo cattolico permette di comprendere meglio quale sia stato lo sforzo di Andreotti per garantire all’esperimento uno spazio di evoluzione che si giovasse del riserbo della Chiesa e permettesse di contrastare gli avversari della collaborazione con i comunisti. Illumina, inoltre, l’atteggiamento dell’uomo politico nei confronti del PCI nel periodo della «solidarietà». Andreotti sostenne la validità di quella politica anche davanti alla Santa Sede, convinto che, dato il quadro parlamentare e la forza elettorale del PCI, la collaborazione dovesse assumere un carattere strategico per far fronte al risanamento economico-finanziario e rispondere alla minaccia terroristica che contava su una consistente area di fiancheggiamento e di consenso.

The Mediterranean, both a sea and a theatre, has served throughout history as a fundamental crossroads for the political-religious dynamics and international tensions that characterize the various worlds, east and west, south and north, that meet in this basin. Starting from these premises, the present work examines - within a chronological span that goes from the conclusion of the Second World War to the end of Pius XII’s pontificate - the contribution offered by the Holy See and by Catholics from different national contexts in deciphering the role of the Mediterranean Sea within the wider global context. As such, it constitutes a reflection on this geographical space with its peculiar cultural, economic, political, and religious realities by highlighting the role played by the Mediterranean in the elaboration of visions and projects of civilization. This work is the fruit of a wider research programme called Occidentes - Horizons and projects of civilization in the Church of Pius XII. Milton, the Sublime and Dramas of Choice challenges readers and scholars to rethink Milton’s relationship to the sublime in terms of ethics. The book demonstrates that Milton’s sublimity merges the early modern reception of Longinus with classical, medieval, and Renaissance categories of magnanimity, wonder, and inspiration to investigate the relations between human and divine agency. Under the influence of early modern models of sublimity, including Spenser and Shakespeare, Milton speaks through his fictional characters about the making of heroic and literary virtue. In turn, the work also sheds light on the importance of tragedy as an additional source to the formation of the Renaissance sublime. Milton’s tragic plots illustrate how the character’s virtue is tested, strengthened, and eventually transformed into an experience of elevation. The study explores the heroic path from dramatic choice to self-realisation, offering extensive treatments of Milton’s dramas – A Maske and Samson Agonistes. The redefinition of the pairing “Milton and the sublime” in this work aims to relocate the poet within the English literary history as the climax of earlier traditions and receptions of the sublime, but also as the starting point of modern sublimity
