It is estimated that about 15% of all animals spread across the majority of lineages are venomous. Animals use venom for various purposes including prey capture, predator deterrence, sexual combat and the provision of food for their offspring. Humans have always been fascinated by venomous animals, albeit in a Janus-faced way. On the one hand, venomous animals have gained a fearsome reputation in the public media, which is further boosted by an annual global death toll in the hundreds of thousands (with many more cases of permanent disablement) with the leading cause being tropical snakes. For this reason, snake envenomation has recently been classified by the World Health Organization as a neglected tropical disease. On the other hand, a growing global scene of enthusiasts in industrialized countries is keeping venomous animals such as snakes, spiders, scorpions, and centipedes in captivity as pets. The (also venomous) honeybees are even used as production animals in agriculture for the pollination of a wide variety of crops, which ensures the survival of billions of people and has the added benefit of yielding delicious honey. Furthermore, recent scientific research focused on exploiting animal venoms for the benefit of humanity in form of novel therapeutics or biopesticides.

Venom written by Ronald Jenner and has been published by Smithsonian Institution this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-17 with Nature categories.

Venom brings readers face to face with some of the most dangerous creatures on the planet, including jellyfish, snakes, and wasps, as it uncovers the story of venom. The book explores how venom is used for predation, defense, competition, and communication by an incredible diversity of species. It examines the unique methods that these species have evolved to create and deliver their deadly toxins. The book traces venom back to its origin in early jellyfish and sea anemones, and reveals how venoms have evolved dozens of times independently all across the animal kingdom since that time. And finally, it examines the relationships between these dangerous creatures and humans. Humans have not only learned to live with them, but also to benefit from them: scientists increasingly are harnessing the power of venom to create new drugs, treatments, and anti-venoms.

Animals use venoms primarily for killing or capturing the prey and for deterring the predator. Animal venoms are a rich source of complex biologically active molecules, which have various molecular functions and targets. There are two ways of classifying animal venoms, first by origin such as spider venoms, snake venoms, and scorpion venoms, and second by their effects on the body, such as hemotoxic and neurotoxic venoms. Animal venoms can lead to serious illnesses in humans and even death in severe cases. They can also cause significant dysfunction of the cardiovascular, muscular and nervous systems. Venoms of several animals are rich sources of compounds, including peptides, proteins, and neurotransmitters, which can damage the prey's body. However, animal venoms also hold therapeutic potential for treating conditions of thrombosis, arthritis, and some cancers. This book unfolds innovative insights on venomous animals and their venoms. It presents researches and studies performed by experts across the globe. The book will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and postgraduate students.

Natural Molecules in Neuroprotection and Neurotoxicity brings together research in the area of natural compounds and their dual effects of neuroprotection and neurotoxicity when interacting with brain cells. This book is organized into four sections that address molecular mechanism underlying neuroprotection and neurotoxicity, neuroprotection mediated by natural molecules, neurotoxicity induced by natural compounds and nanotechnology-related strategies utilized in neuroprotection. Written by well-known researchers all over the world, chapters provide an in-depth analysis of numerous molecules, such as algae, plant and fungus-derived molecules, and comprehensively discuss their mechanisms of action and possible clinical applications. This book provides an essential reference for researchers and clinical scientists interested in the effects of natural compounds on the human health and disease. Covers both neuroprotective and neurotoxic outcomes resulted from the exposure of brain cells to natural molecules Analyzes numerous natural compounds, including animal, vegetal, fungal, bacterial, and marine-derived molecules Discusses the effects of the metabolism of microbiota on the biotransformation of natural molecules and the consequences of these processes on brain cells Contains a section focused on the nanotechnology-related strategies utilized to enhance the bioavailability of natural molecules to brain cells
