"The two world wars were undoubtedly two of the most catastrophic events in human history, not just for those who actually fought in them, but for untold millions of civilians. And even though the wars' superlativeness is unquestioned, our understanding of exactly how bad the civilian costs were is limited. Although the numbers are better for the two wars than for most earlier wars, gaps and uncertainties remain. States went to great lengths to record military casualties, but civilian fatalities often went uncounted, and figures were often deliberately obscured. In this book, renowned economic historian Cormac O Grada aims to set the record straight, establishing a figure for civilian fatalities that reveals much about the nature of modern war. The book builds on earlier estimates of casualties from a range of causes, some reliable, some approximate at best, and warns against spurious precision when approximations are impossible. For example, while the human toll of the Jewish Holocaust is generally agreed to have been about 6 million, the tolls of two other war genocides, those of the Armenian community in Turkey during World War I and of the European Roma community during World War II, cannot be determined with any precision. (Scholarly estimates of these range from 0.6 to 1.2 million, and from "at least 130,000" to "between 250,000 and 500,000.") During World War II Chinese civilians faced both a civil war and Japanese occupation, and no estimate of the resulting civilian deaths, which range from an implausibly low 2.5 million to 20 million, is reliable. The book shows that the single biggest cause of civilian deaths during the two wars were famines, some of which are familiar and well-documented, while others have attracted research only recently, and a few await systematic analysis. The book covers these as well as genocides, particularly the Jewish Holocaust, and deaths from aerial bombing, and shows how in each of these categories the numbers have been controversial and contested. Most of the book deals with death, but it contains accounts too of the tens of millions of displaced persons and refugees and forced labourers, of civilian trauma, and of sexual violence and other atrocities. In the end O Grada argues that the two world wars cost at least 45 to 50 million civilian lives, almost double the cost in military lives. Addressing the uncertainties and inaccuracies in civilian casualties, the book shows the failings of international law and gives a vital and harrowing understanding of the true cost of war"--

During the First World War, mass media achieved an enormous and continuously growing importance in all belligerent countries. Newspaper, illustrated magazines, comics, pamphlets, and instant books, fi ctional works, photography, and the new-born “theater of imagery”, the cinema, were crucial in order to create a heroic vision of the events, to mobilize and maintain the consensus on the war. But their role was pivotal also in creating the image of the war’s end and fi nally, together with a widespread, new literary genre, the war memoirs, to shape the collective memory of the confl ict for the next generations. Even before November 1918, the media raised high expectations for a multifaceted peace: a new global order, the beginning of a peaceful era, the occasion for a regenerating apocalypse. Likewise, in the following decades, particularly war literature and cinema were pivotal to reverse the icon of the Great War as an epic crusade and a glorious chapter of the national history and to create the hegemonic image of a senseless carnage. The Mediatization of War and Peace focalizes on the central role played by mass media in the tortuous transition to the post-war period as well as on the profound disenchantment generated by their prophesies.

This volume is the result of a long commitment of the online journal DEP: Deportate, esuli, profughe to the themes of women pacifists’ thought and activism in the 1900s. The volume is a collection of contributions centred around three main themes. The first part, “Living War: Women’s Experiences during the War”, brings together first-hand accounts from women’s lives as they face the horrors of war, drawn mainly from original sources such as diaries, letters, memoirs and writings. The second, “Thinking Peace: Feminist Thought and Activism”, explores the lives and thought of several key women activists who challenged inequalities and sought to create new opportunities for women, contributing to the definition of a transnational culture of peace. The final section, “International Relations: Toward Future World Peace”, examines the work of a group of women who saw the outbreak of the First World War and the emergence of an international women’s movement for peace as an opportunity to act for their personal emancipation, and, in some cases, for a different idea of politics. The volume fills a notable gap in international history studies, providing a selection of contributions from little-known European contexts such as Italy, Poland, and Austria. The presence and contribution of African-American women, which has been neglected in the history of women’s pacifism, is also explored. Particular attention is given to the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and to the International Congress of Women, held in The Hague in 1915.

Parole, musica, immagini: sono le molteplici voci con cui i prigionieri di guerra del lager tedesco di Celle, nell'Hannover, dal 1917 alla fine della Grande Guerra nel 1918, narrano fatti, momenti di vita e situazioni in gran parte inediti. Su di essi era sceso un troppo lungo silenzio, da parte dei Comandi e del Governo in primo luogo, come se i “vinti di Caporetto”, cosí furono definiti da uno di loro, Guido Sironi, dovessero essere vinti una seconda volta e destinati per sempre all'oblio. In questo libro emerge da quel silenzio un mondo ignorato, con le sue complesse e innumerevoli storie individuali e collettive, col suo carico di umiliazioni, dolori, fatiche, fame e freddo lungamente sopportati, malattie e morte, ma anche di insopprimibile desiderio di vita. Rimasti per lo più sepolti per molti anni negli archivi familiari, diari, memorie e testimonianze ora possono riprendere voce e raccontare i pensieri, le azioni, i sentimenti dei prigionieri. ROLANDO ANNI è docente di Letteratura e Cristianesimo presso l'ISSR dell'Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Brescia, segretario scientifico dell'Archivio storico della Resistenza bresciana e dell'Età contemporanea della medesima Università. Fondatore del Centro Studi Musica e Grande Guerra. Dottore di ricerca in Storia contemporanea, è stato borsista della Fondazione Salvatorelli, della Fondazione Gorrieri e della Fondazione Basso. Collabora con l'Università di Reggio Emilia. LAURO JAMES GARIMBERTI ha lavorato a lungo per un'importante azienda bancaria. Da circa trent'anni si interessa alla storia della Grande Guerra e in particolare agli aspetti della vita quotidiana in trincea. Iscritto alle più importanti associazioni del settore, conduce ricerche sulla linea del fronte italoaustriaco, in specie sul versante dolomitico. Con la sua ricca collezione di reperti ha allestito il museo Il nemico era come noi a disposizione del pubblico per attività didattiche e per frequenti mostre temporanee; è promotore e ideatore delle mostre Prigionieri dimenticati, soldati italiani nei Lager della Grande Guerra (2013) e Trincea (2014). Fondatore del Centro Studi Musica e Grande Guerra. MARIA NERONI ha una formazione artistica espressa in trenta anni di attività di progettazione edilizia, di studio e restauro di edifici storici e di design d'interni. Attività che l'ha portata nel tempo ad accostarsi anche all'artigianato artistico valorizzato in provincia di Reggio Emilia dal Consorzio Ars Canusina. Negli ultimi anni sostiene attivamente la ricerca storica sulla Grande Guerra, cura l'immagine grafica e la progettazione degli eventi espositivi proposti sul territorio. CARLO PERUCCHETTI. Musicista, violinista, già professore d'orchestra della Filarmonica Toscanini. Si è dedicato alla ricerca del canto popolare, pubblicando diversi studi. Da circa vent'anni si occupa della musica e dei musicisti durante la prima guerra mondiale, fonda l'Associazione Centro Studi Musica e Grande Guerra di cui è vicepresidente. Crea e organizza approfondimenti storico-musicali, spettacoli, conferenze-concerto e partecipa a convegni internazionali su questo tema. Nell'agosto 2014 partecipa al al convegno organizzato dalla British Library, dedicato a “Musica e Prima guerra mondiale”, con l'intervento Musica e musicisti italiani nei campi di concentramento della Grande Guerra. All'inizio del 2013 si sono verificati due eventi inediti: la rielezione a capo dello Stato di Giorgio Napolitano e il successo elettorale del Movimento 5 Stelle. Le vicende editoriali, nate su iniziativa di Camillo e Adriano Olivetti, non sono state ancora oggetto di uno studio complessivo e sistematico. Questo volume raccoglie i primi risultati di una ricerca dedicata alle riviste aziendali dell’impresa eporediese a partire dai primi anni venti fino agli anni novanta del XX secolo. Oltre a testimoniare l’impegno politico e una visione innovativa del fare impresa, la peculiarità di questa vicenda culturale sta nella continuità di un pensiero e di una azione, che ha le radici nella storia della famiglia fondatrice e che prosegue oltre la scomparsa di Adriano. Tra gli obiettivi del volume vi è quello di rimettere in discussione la vulgata secondo la quale il suo pensiero e la sua azione modernizzatrice si siano concluse con la sua morte nel febbraio 1960. La continuità del pensiero di Adriano Olivetti si evince da una ricca produzione culturale che si distingue per le pubblicazioni e le iniziative di alto livello, e che si incrocia con l’attività dell’impresa, nel corso del secondo Novecento. Dopo l’era di Adriano, «gli olivettiani della seconda ora» portano avanti una nuova operazione culturale con la stessa determinazione del fondatore. Tra la fine degli anni sessanta e a metà degli anni novanta, la società Olivetti prosegue la pubblicazione delle riviste aziendali senza soluzione di continuità. In particolare, il volume ricostruisce un’esperienza editoriale inedita riguardante «GO» (1973-1980), periodico dedicato a cultura, economia e tecnica, rivolto anche a lettori esterni all’azienda. «GO» fornisce indicazioni di modernizzazione della società proponendo una politica, che poteva apparire visionaria, di innovazione e di svecchiamento del paese. L’esperienza di «GO» aiuta a comprendere un altro elemento che caratterizza la storia culturale della Olivetti. Alla responsabilità del pensare e dell’agire va accostato il senso di creatività «non organizzata». Rispetto ai «grandi nomi», spesso transitati nella storia aziendale, merita ricordare figure, meno note, che hanno operato nell’ombra.
