Why a new book on stress when so many are already available? There is widespread awareness of the impact of scientific research in this field, both theoretical and practical. Scores of articles and books have been published. What is especially exciting about the range of theories and ideas presented in this book is that they derive from a variety of different intellectual traditions and scientific disciplines. The book is not an attempt to replace more extensive or basic treatments of this subject. Rather, it seeks to present the authors viewpoints together with data and methodological applications based on their personal experience in a straightforward manner. A number of the articles were commissioned some time ago, when Horst Mayer decided to publish the papers presented at a symposium which he organized in Heidelberg under the auspices of the German College of Psychosomatic Medicine. Others emerged from later contacts with authors in different parts of the world. The result is a rather heterogeneous collection of "perspectives" on stress which, it is hoped, will stimulate readers to arrive at their own conclusions through its very diversity. When it was decided that Femando Lolas would join this endeavor at the end of 1984, it became clear that the material had lost none of its appeal.

These processes can also be explained theoretically with psychoanalytical understanding. It reminds of Sisyphus, who, in contrast to Oedipus, is not so well known in Freud's psychoanalysis. But Sisyphus was not only a hero regarding the severity of life, but also a role model in dying, outsmarting death twice. The narrow passage between life and death represents a life of a different kind that can be neuro-psychically grasped. And so it is no longer about a life after death, but about one while dying. This orientation probably also plays a role in Sisyphus, but it can also be used for a direct self-practice for today. With the method of Analytic Psychocatharsis the author has combined psychoanalytic and meditative procedure, which, even practiced by oneself, helps to outsmart death even today by using this span of life in dying. Because this other life can be used only who has learned it before to a large extent.

Just recent psychoanalytical studies have described the very early body-self-mirrorings, according to which the infant still remains largely in volved in itself. Even in adult life these experiences of morroring the inner vertical, or better espressed as a vertical Ego, still play an important role. The dominant worldview in Japan is deeply animistic, with beliefs such as the Japanese mana-concept, ki (気), the Japanese soul-concept, and the concept of God/god(s), kami (神), being deeply rooted in the culture and fundamentally influencing society. Dr Martin Heißwolf, with his years of experience in Japan, critically examines Japanese animism in light of core Christian beliefs, such as the concepts of “peace” and “salvation.” Central to Japanese people’s rejection of Christian truth is the diametric opposition of its supernatural message to the natural focus of Japanese animistic folk religion.
