Die vorliegende Untersuchung zeigt auf, in welchem Maße das Denken Friedrich Schlegels nicht nur in der produktiven Phase der Jenaer Frühromantik, sondern weit darüber hinaus durch eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit der Literatur, Philosophie und Religion der Antike geprägt wurde. Sie beleuchtet den hohen Stellenwert der Antikerezeption für die Genese der frühromantischen Poetik sowie die Bedeutung der Antike als konzeptueller Bezugspunkt kulturphilosophischer, ethischer und politischer Positionen Schlegels. Erstmalig erfolgt im Rahmen dieser Untersuchung eine systematische Auswertung der religionsphilosophischen und -wissenschaftlichen Orientstudien, mit denen Friedrich Schlegel seinen kulturgeschichtlichen Gesichtskreis von der griechischen und römischen Antike bis auf den asiatischen Kulturraum vom frühesten Altertum an ausweitete. Mit Blick auf die übergreifende Auseinandersetzung Friedrich Schlegels mit der Literatur, Philosophie und Religion des Altertums zeichnen sich zugleich Kontinuitäten in seinem Denken ab, die sein Frühwerk mit den späten Schriften - bei allen leicht zu identifizierenden Brüchen im zerklüfteten Werk dieses Autors - verbinden.

Die antike Idyllik impliziert ein triadisches Modell einer idealisierten Vergangenheit, einer defizitären Gegenwart und einer perfektiblen Utopie. In der ästhetischen Theorie und Praxis hat dieses topische Denkbild eine fast beispiellose Wirkung entfaltet. Anhand von kanonischen Zeugnissen der europäischen Kulturtradition stellen die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger des Bandes seine Filiationen in der Text- und Bildwelt zwischen Hellenismus und Postmoderne vor und schließen damit eine Forschungslücke. Ohne den Rekurs auf die Antike und die gattungstheoretischen Diskussionen der Aufklärung und Romantik sind selbst die Antiidyllik oder die Definition des Genres als ,forma non grata‘ im 20. Jahrhundert nicht konkretisierbar. Das macht nicht zuletzt die Vielfalt der mit der Idylle und dem ‚Idyllischen‘ verbundenen philosophischen, ästhetischen, anthropologischen, historischen, theologischen sowie wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Fragestellungen deutlich. Das Denkbild einer unentfremdeten, natürlichen Existenz erweist sich als konstante und transkulturelle Kategorie, die in ihrer Tendenz zur Teleologie, zur kausalen Geschlossenheit und zur Reduktion von Komplexität als kognitive Strategie der Existenzbewältigung anzusehen ist.

This book interprets all seven Sophoclean tragedies (5th century B.C.) as a whole, focussing on the aspect of individuals being guilty of not reaching proper conclusions about their own selves and their situation, although they possess the means and ability to do so. Chapter I offers exact definitions of the concepts employed in analyzing the tragedies. Chapters II-VIII each contain a detailed interpretation of one of Sophocles’ seven tragedies. Chapter IX ('Tableau’) presents the dramatic works within the context of Greek history of thought and politics of their time, while Chapter X sheds some light on how Sophoclean concepts were continued in the comedies of Menander. This is the second of three volumes based on papers given at the 'Fragile Tradition' conference in Cambridge, 2002.
