El argumento central del texto es evidenciar que relacion existe entre los contextos productivos y el envejecimiento, desde una perspectiva comparativa con poblacion rural envejecida que se dedica al cultivo de la cana de azucar, citricos, cafe y maiz. La investigacion se llevo a cabo en 2008 y 2009. Primeramente se hace un repaso historico de las dinamicas nacionales, regionales y locales, asi como de la actuacion de los ahora productores en edad avanzada, tratando de llevar a cabo un balance de la problematica local de las areas de estudio. En la segunda parte, se hace la etnografia del trabajo de campo en cada uno de los cultivos, evidenciando los estilos de vida, terminando con una correlacion de los estilos de vida de los cuatro cultivos, con algunas reflexiones en torno a sus representaciones objetivas y subjetivas, tendencias y perspectivas.

This book looks at the relationships between the physical-social environment and the elderly in Europe and Latin America, from the Environmental Gerontology perspective and through geographical and psychosocial approaches. It addresses the main environmental issues of population ageing, based on an understanding of the complex relationships, adjustments and adaptations between different environments (home, residence, public spaces, landscapes, neighbourhoods, urban and rural environment) and the quality of life of the ageing population, associated with residential strategies and other aspects related to health and dependency. The different levels of socio-spatial analysis are also explored: macro (urban and rural environments, regions and landscapes), meso (neighbourhood, public space) and micro (personal, home and institution). New theoretical and methodological approaches are proposed to analyse the attributes and functions of the physical-social environment of the elderly, as well as new ways of living the ageing process. All will have to respond to the challenges of urbanisation, globalisation and climate change in the 21st century. Also, the different experiences and challenges of public planning and management professionals involved with the growing ageing population are presented, and will require greater association and collaboration with the academic and scientific fields of Environmental Gerontology.

Much of our understanding of local economic development is based on large urban agglomerations as nodes of innovation and competitive advantage, connecting territories to global value chains. However, this framework cannot so easily be applied to peripheral regions and secondary cities in either the Global South or the North. This book proposes an alternative way of looking at local economic development based on the idea of fragile governance and three variables: associations and networks; learning processes; and leadership and conflict management in six Latin American peripheral regions. The case studies illustrate the challenges of governance in small and intermediate cities in Latin America, and showcase strategies that are being used to achieve a more resilient and territorial vision of local economic development.
