Stochastic model predictive control (MPC) is a fascinating field for research and of increasing practical importance since optimal control techniques have been intensively investigated in modern control system design. With the development of computer technologies and communication networks, networked control systems (NCSs) or cyber-physical systems (CPSs) have become an interest of research due to the comprehensive integration of physical systems, such as sensors, actuators and plants, with intricate cyber components, possessing information communication and computation. In CPSs, advantages of low installation cost, high reliability, flexible modularity, improved efficiency, and greater autonomy can be obtained by the tight coordination of physical and cyber components. Several sectors, including robotics, transportation, health care, smart buildings, and smart grid, have witnessed the successful application of CPSs design. The integration of extensive cyber capability and physical plants with ubiquitous uncertainties also introduces concerns over communication efficiency, robustness and stability of the CPSs. Thus, to achieve satisfactory performance metrics of efficiency, robustness and stability, a detailed investigation into control synthesis of CPSs under the stochastic model predictive control framework is of importance. The stochastic model predictive control synthesis plays a vital role in CPSs design since the multivariable stochastic system subject to probabilistic constraints can be controlled in an optimized way. On the other hand, aperiodically sampled, or event-based, model predictive control has also been applied to CPSs extensively to improve communication efficiency. In this thesis, the control synthesis and analysis of aperiodically sampled stochastic model predictive control for CPSs is considered. Chapter 1 provides an introductory literature review of the current development of stochastic MPC, distributed stochastic MPC and event-based MPC. Chapter 2 presents a stochastic self-triggered model predictive control scheme for linear systems with additive uncertainty and with the states and inputs being subject to chance constraints. In the proposed control scheme, the succeeding sampling time instant and current control inputs are computed online by solving a formulated optimization problem. Chapter 3 discusses a stochastic self-triggered model predictive control algorithm with an adaptive prediction horizon. The communication cost is explicitly considered by adding a damping factor in the cost function. Sufficient conditions are provided to guarantee closed-loop chance constraints satisfactions. Furthermore, the recursive feasibility of the algorithm is analyzed, and the closed-loop system is shown to be stable. Chapter 4 proposes a distributed self-triggered stochastic MPC control scheme for CPSs under coupled chance constraints and additive disturbances. Based on the assumptions on stochastic disturbances, both local and coupled probabilistic constraints are transformed into the deterministic form using the tube-based method, and improved terminal constraints are constructed to guarantee the recursive feasibility of the control scheme. Theoretical analysis has shown that the overall closed-loop CPSs are quadratically stable. Numerical examples illustrate the efficacy of the proposed control method in terms of data transmission reductions. Chapter 5 concludes the thesis and suggests some promising directions for future research.

This thesis addresses data-driven analysis as well as prediction-based design of aperiodic sampling in control systems. In many modern control applications, the traditional view of sampling and controlling in a periodic fashion must be abandoned due to varying transmission delays, data loss or uneven computational latencies. The effect of these undesired aperiodicities on the closed loop must thus be analyzed. In addition, a targeted aperiodic design of the sampling pattern, e.g. via event-triggered control (ETC), often allows for a better usage of bandwidth than periodic concepts. We consider both perspectives in this thesis. In particular, first we provide methods to analyze stability of control systems under arbitrary aperiodic sampling directly from recorded data. Previous approaches to this end required model knowledge, which might be challenging to obtain. Second, we propose a prediction-based approach for design of the aperiodic sampling pattern, called rollout ETC. This approach allows for predictability of the required communication resources and a guarantee of improved sample efficiency, which were both difficult to address in existing ETC schemes.

In this thesis, we employ set-theoretic properties of additively disturbed linear discrete-time systems to develop stabilizing aperiodically updated control laws for plants controlled over communication networks. In particular, we design event-triggered and self-triggered controllers with a priori guarantees on closed-loop characteristics such as stability, asymptotic bound, and average communication rate. Different models for the disturbances are taken into account, namely arbitrary disturbances of which only a bound in the form of a compact set is known and stochastic disturbances with known probability distribution. For setups with hard constraints on the states and inputs, we propose aperiodic schemes based on robust model predictive control methods. Both the full information (state-feedback) case, as well as the limited information (output-feedback) case are investigated. It is demonstrated that the proposed controllers achieve a considerable reduction in the required network usage with only moderate or non-existing deterioration of the closed-loop properties guaranteed by comparable controllers that transmit information at every point in time.

Optimal Design of Distributed Control and Embedded Systems focuses on the design of special control and scheduling algorithms based on system structural properties as well as on analysis of the influence of induced time-delay on systems performances. It treats the optimal design of distributed and embedded control systems (DCESs) with respect to communication and calculation-resource constraints, quantization aspects, and potential time-delays induced by the associated communication and calculation model. Particular emphasis is put on optimal control signal scheduling based on the system state. In order to render this complex optimization problem feasible in real time, a time decomposition is based on periodicity induced by the static scheduling is operated. The authors present a co-design approach which subsumes the synthesis of the optimal control laws and the generation of an optimal schedule of control signals on real-time networks as well as the execution of control tasks on a single processor. The authors also operate a control structure modification or a control switching based on a thorough analysis of the influence of the induced time-delay system influence on stability and system performance in order to optimize DCES performance in case of calculation and communication resource limitations. Although the richness and variety of classes of DCES preclude a completely comprehensive treatment or a single “best” method of approaching them all, this co-design approach has the best chance of rendering this problem feasible and finding the optimal or some sub-optimal solution. The text is rounded out with references to such applications as car suspension and unmanned vehicles. Optimal Design of Distributed Control and Embedded Systems will be of most interest to academic researchers working on the mathematical theory of DCES but the wide range of environments in which they are used also promotes the relevance of the text for control practitioners working in the avionics, automotive, energy-production, space exploration and many other industries.
