The interest in control of nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) sys tems has been triggered by the need to achieve tight distributed control of transport-reaction processes that exhibit highly nonlinear behavior and strong spatial variations. Drawing from recent advances in dynamics of PDE systems and nonlinear control theory, control of nonlinear PDEs has evolved into a very active research area of systems and control. This book the first of its kind- presents general methods for the synthesis of nonlinear and robust feedback controllers for broad classes of nonlinear PDE sys tems and illustrates their applications to transport-reaction processes of industrial interest. Specifically, our attention focuses on quasi-linear hyperbolic and parabolic PDE systems for which the manipulated inputs and measured and controlled outputs are distributed in space and bounded. We use geometric and Lyapunov-based control techniques to synthesize nonlinear and robust controllers that use a finite number of measurement sensors and control actuators to achieve stabilization of the closed-loop system, output track ing, and attenuation of the effect of model uncertainty. The controllers are successfully applied to numerous convection-reaction and diffusion-reaction processes, including a rapid thermal chemical vapor deposition reactor and a Czochralski crystal growth process. The book includes comparisons of the proposed nonlinear and robust control methods with other approaches and discussions of practical implementation issues.

Control and Dynamic Systems: Advances in Theory and Applications, Volume 50: Robust Control System Techniques and Applications, Part 1 of 2 is a two-volume sequence devoted to the issues and application of robust control systems techniques. This volume is composed of 10 chapters and begins with a presentation of the important techniques for dealing with conflicting design objectives in control systems. The subsequent chapters describe the robustness techniques of systems using differential-difference equations; the design of a wide class of robust nonlinear systems, the techniques for dealing with the problems resulting from the use of observers in robust systems design, and the effective techniques for the robust control on non-linear time varying of tracking control systems with uncertainties. These topics are followed by discussions of the effective techniques for the robust control on non-linear time varying of tracking control systems with uncertainties and for incorporating adaptive control techniques into a (non-adaptive) robust control design. Other chapters present techniques for achieving exponential and robust stability for a rather general class of nonlinear systems, techniques in modeling uncertain dynamics for robust control systems design, and techniques for the optimal synthesis of these systems. The last chapters provide a generalized eigenproblem solution for both singular and nonsingular system cases. These chapters also look into the stability robustness design for discrete-time systems. This book will be of value to process and systems engineers, designers, and researchers.

Stabilization, Optimal and Robust Control develops robust control of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems derived from time-dependent coupled PDEs associated with boundary-value problems. Rigorous analysis takes into account nonlinear system dynamics, evolutionary and coupled PDE behaviour and the selection of function spaces in terms of solvability and model quality. Mathematical foundations are provided so that the book remains accessible to the non-control-specialist. Following chapters giving a general view of convex analysis and optimization and robust and optimal control, problems arising in fluid mechanical, biological and materials scientific systems are laid out in detail. The combination of mathematical fundamentals with application of current interest will make this book of much interest to researchers and graduate students looking at complex problems in mathematics, physics and biology as well as to control theorists.

This volume is the second of the three volume publication containing the proceedings of the 1989 International Symposium on the Mathemat ical Theory of Networks and Systems (MTNS-89), which was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, June 19-23, 1989 The International Symposia MTNS focus attention on problems from system and control theory, circuit theory and signal processing, which, in general, require application of sophisticated mathematical tools, such as from function and operator theory, linear algebra and matrix theory, differential and algebraic geometry. The interaction between advanced mathematical methods and practical engineering problems of circuits, systems and control, which is typical for MTNS, turns out to be most effective and is, as these proceedings show, a continuing source of exciting advances. The second volume contains invited papers and a large selection of other symposium presentations in the vast area of robust and nonlinear control. Modern developments in robust control and H-infinity theory, for finite as well as for infinite dimensional systems, are presented. A large part of the volume is devoted to nonlinear control. Special atten tion is paid to problems in robotics. Also the general theory of nonlinear and infinite dimensional systems is discussed. A couple of papers deal with problems of stochastic control and filterina. vi Preface The titles of the two other volumes are: Realization and Modelling in System Theory (volume 1) and Signal Processing, Scattering and Operator Theory, and Numerical Methods (volume 3).

Robust and Adaptive Control shows the reader how to produce consistent and accurate controllers that operate in the presence of uncertainties and unforeseen events. Driven by aerospace applications the focus of the book is primarily on continuous-dynamical systems. The text is a three-part treatment, beginning with robust and optimal linear control methods and moving on to a self-contained presentation of the design and analysis of model reference adaptive control (MRAC) for nonlinear uncertain dynamical systems. Recent extensions and modifications to MRAC design are included, as are guidelines for combining robust optimal and MRAC controllers. Features of the text include: · case studies that demonstrate the benefits of robust and adaptive control for piloted, autonomous and experimental aerial platforms; · detailed background material for each chapter to motivate theoretical developments; · realistic examples and simulation data illustrating key features of the methods described; and · problem solutions for instructors and MATLAB® code provided electronically. The theoretical content and practical applications reported address real-life aerospace problems, being based on numerous transitions of control-theoretic results into operational systems and airborne vehicles that are drawn from the authors’ extensive professional experience with The Boeing Company. The systems covered are challenging, often open-loop unstable, with uncertainties in their dynamics, and thus requiring both persistently reliable control and the ability to track commands either from a pilot or a guidance computer. Readers are assumed to have a basic understanding of root locus, Bode diagrams, and Nyquist plots, as well as linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, and the use of state-space methods in analysis and modeling of dynamical systems. Robust and Adaptive Control is intended to methodically teach senior undergraduate and graduate students how to construct stable and predictable control algorithms for realistic industrial applications. Practicing engineers and academic researchers will also find the book of great instructional value.

Robust Control Of Nonlinear Uncertain Systems written by Zhihua Qu and has been published by Wiley-VCH this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-04-29 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This timely work presents the definitive treatment of stability analysis and robust control design for nonlinear uncertain systems. While other books on the subject deal with robust control in linear systems, this is the first book to tackle robust control design for such nonlinear entities as power systems, robotics, and more. It combines examples, proofs, and applications-clearly showing how to build high performance and better control into systems that are too complex to be modeled accurately. A unique feature of this book is its Lyapunov-based approach to control design, which is the only universal approach for nonlinear systems. The Lyapunov direct method is used here to develop all design procedures, to correlate leading techniques in the field to the structural properties of uncertain systems, and to compare robust and nonrobust types of controls such as adaptive control, learning control, and optimal control. The subject is introduced with a self-contained treatment of the nonlinear stability theory originally proposed by Lyapunov and LaSalle. Emphasizing the basics, the introductory chapters incorporate three types of solutions, stability concepts, and various theorems. The main body of the text offers a comprehensive treatment for current design methods, including state space robust control designs, properties of various robust controllers, input-output control, and discrete robust control designs. In Robust Control of Nonlinear Uncertain Systems, author Zhihua Qu presents the complete set of control design procedures for nonlinear uncertain systems, including backward recurisve design, forward recursive design, recursive-interlacing design, feedback linearization, nonlinear optimal control, and sub-optimal control. Also featured here is the breakthrough recursive interlacing design that facilitates robust control for uncertain systems with all cascaded, feedback, and feedforward dynamics. Throughout, Professor Qu presents the pros and cons of specific methods, rationales for choosing particular design parameters, and tips on questions of stability, performance, and systems structure. For engineers and graduate students in mechanical, electrical, and aerospace engineering, Robust Control of Nonlinear Uncertain Systems imparts the technical know-how for effective design, explores key theoretical issues in control, and provides insight into future trends in the field.
