Electric currents and electromagnetic fields have been applied to biological systems, particularly humans, with both therapeutic and pathological results. Applied Bioelectricity discusses biological responses to electric currents and electromagnetic fields, including medical applications and shock hazards. The book covers fundamental physical and engineering principles of responses to short-term electrical exposure and emphasizes human reactions, although animal responses to electricity are considered as well. The treatment covers reactions from the just-detectable to the clearly detrimental. An important new chapter discusses standards for human exposure to electromagnetic fields and electric current and demonstrates how these standards have been developed based on the principles treated in earlier chapters. J. Patrick Reilly is a member of the principal staff of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory and is President of Metatec Associates.

Processing Of Foods And Biomass Feedstocks By Pulsed Electric Energy written by Eugene Vorobiev and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-10 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book presents a comprehensive range of research on pulsed electric energy used in food processing, including sections on the fundamentals of electroporation and important techniques for the estimation of electroporation effects in various foods and biomass feedstocks. By focusing on application over theory, this book presents researchers with practical steps for processing techniques such as solid-liquid extraction, pressing, osmotic dehydration, drying, freezing and cooking. Special interest is given to the selective recovery and extraction of sugar, inulin, starch, proteins, polysaccharides, polyphenols, pigments, flavor compounds, phytochemicals and other of high-value components from food biomasses such as fruits and vegetables, leaves, herbs, mushrooms, microalgae and suspensions of cells. Processing of Foods and Biomass Feedstocks by Pulsed Electric Energy presents a singular overview of the biorefinery applications of pulsed electric energy for the processing of wastes and non-food biomasses such as root and tuber crops, grape waste, lignocellulosic biomass, oil crops and residues and seeds and peels of exotic and citrus fruits. The book begins by presenting general information on the fundamentals of electroporation and information on the procedures and protocols involved. Further chapters focus on the specific food processing operations involved and biorefinery applications for the processing of wastes and non-food biomasses. All of the relevant and up-to-date information any researcher needs on pulsed electric energy in food processing is presented here in this text.

This volume includes the lectures and selected posters on different aspects of biological effects of EMF, presented at the NATO ADVANCED RESEARCH WORKSHOP “The mechanisms of biological effect Extremely High Power Pulses (EHPP)” (3-5 March 2005) and the UNESCO/WHO/IUPAB Seminar “Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of Biological Effects of EMF” (1-2 March 2005) that took place in Yerevan, Armenia. The gracious support of several international organizations made possible to bring together 47 scientists, engineers, physicians and policy makers from 21 countries from Europe, North and South America, Asia. The Capital of Armenia, Yerevan, provided an excellent opportunity for discussions of the experimental data and theoretical models of EMF effect on various levels, starting from cell aqua bathing medium to the whole organism, including the human, applying multidisciplinary approaches. The continuous increase of the number of man made EMF sources leads to dramatic changes in the spectrum of EMF in the biosphere. During the last two decades the public concern about potential hazard of EMF generated by power and distribution lines, as well as mobile communications and base stations have initiated serious public concern and has triggered the attention of the WHO, which reflected in the EMF project of harmonization of standards. At the same time, contemporary medicine largely uses EMF diagnostic methods. The beneficial effects of EMF are complemented with a large scale of EMF therapeutic modalities used in a number of countries, helping millions of people.

Electroporation Based Therapies For Cancer written by Raji Sundararajan and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-28 with Medical categories.

Electroporation-Based Therapies for Cancer reviews electroporation-based clinical studies in hospitals for various cancer treatments, including melanomas, head and neck cancers, chest wall breast carcinomas, and colorectal cancers, as well as research studies in the lab using cell lines, primary cells, and animals. Cancer kills about one American per minute, amounting to over 500,000 deaths in the United States and millions, worldwide, each year. There is a critical need for safe, effective, and affordable alternative treatment modalities, especially for inoperable, recurring, and chemo-resistant cancers, that do not respond well to current treatment regimen. An electrical-pulse-mediated, enhanced drug delivery technique known as electroporation is one way to effectively treat these patients. This technique is especially suitable for low- and middle-income countries, where lack of infrastructure and resources leads to cancer diagnoses at late stages. This quick, safe, effective, economical, out-patient-based technique is a boon to these patients for palliative and other care with enhanced quality of life. This book features discussions by interdisciplinary authors—including practicing oncological surgeons, medical professionals, and academic and other researchers—of the basics and clinical medical applications of electroporation. - Provides novel and recent clinical applications of electrochemotherapy for various cancers, including melanomas, sarcomas, superficial extreme melanoma, chest wall breast carcinoma, and colorectal cancers - Extensive study of a number of cell lines, including human breast cancer, lung cancer, cervical cancer, leukemia, and mouse breast cancer using both reversible and irreversible electroporation techniques - In vitro study of delivery of various commonly prescribed/administered breast cancer chemo and hormone drugs, such as Doxorubicin, Paclitaxel, Bleomycin, and Tamoxifen

Biophysics - the science of physical principles of life itself, of biological systems - is presented here not merely as physics for biologists, but as an entirely independent subject with its own innate network of ideas and approaches. From the microscopic forces that constitute life, the intramolecular bonds and ionic interactions, to the macroscopic forces of the environment, temperature and pressure, the author presents and explains all aspects of life from a Biophysicist's point of view. Exciting biological themes such as neuronal processing and differentiation as well as current medical and environmental topics are introduced from a surprising perspective in this imaginative new textbook.
