Este livro é resultado de uma pesquisa acadêmica que, pautada no pressuposto vigotskiano de que a aprendizagem de conceitos é promotora do desenvolvimento psíquico dos sujeitos, procurou identificar ações educativas que favorecem a aprendizagem conceitual na educação pré-escolar. Para atingir o objetivo proposto, foram realizadas investigações teóricas e de campo. Os aportes teóricos foram buscados na Teoria Histórico-Cultural, de modo especial na compreensão da relação entre pensamento e linguagem e sobre a formação de conceitos na criança. Os dados empíricos analisados foram produzidos por meio de um experimento didático realizado com uma turma de 19 crianças com faixa etária entre 4 e 5 anos de idade que frequentam um Centro de Educação Infantil de uma instituição de ensino superior, situado no norte do estado do Paraná. O percurso empreendido permitiu reconhecer algumas ações de ensino que se mostraram favoráveis à aprendizagem de conceitos por crianças nessa etapa do desenvolvimento. Nesse sentido, a presente obra apresenta conhecimentos que podem contribuir para a organização do ensino em instituições de educação infantil, no que se refere à aprendizagem e ao desenvolvimento conceitual da criança pré-escolar, ao apontar alternativas metodológicas mais favoráveis ao trabalho pedagógico nessa etapa da Educação Básica. Esta pesquisa objetiva elucidar condições teórico-metodológicas favoráveis ao ensino e aprendizagem de conceitos científicos. Com base nas referências teóricas fornecidas pela perspectiva histórico-cultural, apoiada principalmente na Teoria da Atividade de Leontiev, a tese retoma a relação entre apropriação conceitual e desenvolvimento do psiquismo e procura evidenciar propriedades do ensino em que os conceitos propiciem impacto qualitativo sobre o desenvolvimento psíquico. Distintos entendimentos do que seja conceito e seu modo de apropriação influenciam a organização da prática pedagógica, conduzindo a diferentes níveis de generalização dos conceitos apreendidos. Diante disso, procedeu-se, inicialmente, à análise de como têm sido ensinados conceitos científicos na escola. O estudo evidencia a forte influência da lógica formal e sua repercussão na modalidade de funcionamento intelectual dos alunos que se atêm ao pensamento empírico. Posteriormente, o trabalho destaca que a percepção do conceito como instrumento cognitivo, bem como a compreensão do processo ativo de apropriação pelo sujeito, oferecem indicadores para se considerar a aprendizagem como uma atividade que envolve necessidades e motivos e que se realiza mediante ações e operações.
