Album prezentujący dzieła należące do historycznej kolekcji malarstwa zgromadzonej w Muzeum Pałac Herbsta. Widziałem prawdziwe arcydzieło: Rodakowskiego Portret matki. Obraz ten godzien jest poprzedniego, który tak olśnił mnie na wystawie - zanotował 8 kwietnia 1853 roku w swoim Dzienniku Eugėne Delacroix po wizycie w paryskiej pracowni Henryka Rodakowskiego. Portret, namalowany podczas pobytu artysty w rodzinnym Lwowie, został wówczas zaprezentowany na Salonie i entuzjastycznie przyjęty przez francuskich krytyków. Artysta nigdy tego obrazu nie sprzedał. Uczynił to dopiero w 1937 jego syn Zygmunt. Dzięki usilnym staraniom Mariana Minicha, ówczesnego dyrektora Miejskiego Muzeum Historii i Sztuki im. J. i K. Bartoszewiczów, dzieło zostało nabyte do łódzkiej kolekcji. Obejmując stanowisko w 1934 roku, Minich nakreślił plan rozwoju Muzeum. Wskazał dwa najważniejsze cele o kluczowym, jego zdaniem, znaczeniu. Pierwszym był dalszy rozwój kolekcji sztuki nowoczesnej, drugim zaś gromadzenie XIX- i XX-wiecznych dzieł sztuki polskiej o dużych walorach artystycznych. Dzięki konsekwencji w działaniu jeszcze w latach 30. zbiory łódzkiego Muzeum wzbogaciły się o obrazy, które również obecnie stanowią najcenniejszą część kolekcji malarstwa polskiego. Spośród tych nabytków nie sposób nie wymienić choćby Wizji Jacka Malczewskiego, Pana w czerwonym fraku Aleksandra Gierymskiego czy Napoleona na koniu Piotra Michałowskiego, a także obrazów Leona Wyczółkowskiego Rybak i Autoportret z paletą oraz namalowanego przez Jana Matejkę Portretu syna na koniu. Te i wiele innych cennych dzieł z naszej kolekcji prezentujemy na niniejszej wystawie. Publikacja przygotowana we współpracy z Urzędem Marszałkowskim Województwa Łódzkiego.

Atlas of Modernity' is an exhibition that allows to see the collection of Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, Poland, in a different way, but, more importantly, it is also a story of modernity and its meaning from a contemporary perspective constructed with the works included in the exhibition. The exhibition does not report the history of modernity put in chronological order, neither does it present the history of modern art. It focuses on the most important phenomena that are commonly connected with that which is modern, such as: emancipation, autonomy, industrialisation, capital, urbanisation, experiment, mechanization and revolution. By creating a 'collage' of artworks from different periods, representing different aesthetics and artistic attitudes around these notions the exhibition poses questions about how the character of the phenomena changed, how the way they were perceived altered and, most importantly, to what extent they shape contemporary reality.
