Poeta romantico, cultore di Dante Alighieri, appassionato di Medioevo e di misteri, simbolista estetizzante, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (Londra 1828 - Birchington-on-Sea 1882) è il più perfetto rappresentante dei preraffaelliti. Il gruppo, che comprendeva anche Millais, Hunt, Brown, caratterizzò la pittura inglese di epoca vittoriana con le sue composizioni anti accademiche ispirate al Quattrocento italiano, che gli esponenti di questa corrente consideravano il momento di massima purezza e genuinità espressiva dell’arte europea. Figlio di un esule italiano, a vent’anni Rossetti tradusse in inglese la Vita nuova di Dante e fu tra i fondatori della citata confraternita. Aveva iniziato a dipingere da adolescente e prestissimo si innamorò e sposò una sua modella, Elizabeth Siddal, che rimase per sempre il suo punto di riferimento. La sua produzione è caratterizzata da una potente capacità evocativa di mondi simbolici idealizzati, densi di sensualità e mistero, popolati da figure femminili identiche alla sua Elizabeth.
