By 1915, pioneer aviator Art Smith was as celebrated as any movie star might be today. He thrilled audiences with his barnstorming feats, doing "death spirals," sky writing, "loop-the-loops," and night flights using phosphorus fireworks. He glamorized and popularized aviation while testing the boundaries of aeronautical principles. As a boy he longed to fly before he had ever seen an airplane. His parents believed in him, and he was fortunate to have a best friend named Al Wertman who helped him build an airplane. His fame spread around the globe and in 1916, the Japanese offered him $10,000 for a series of exhibitions. His flying skills inspired a young Wiley Post to a life of aviation. After Smith's death, when Lindbergh flew over Fort Wayne and dipped his wings, he gave credit to the "Bird Boy" Art Smith. Dad got the money from the bank that had first refused to lend it to me. I remember, just before the banker signed the check, he looked at dad and me over the tops of his glasses for a long time, hesitating., "Mr. Smith, I ought to tell you that you are doing a very foolish thing," he said. Dad straightened up in his chair. "The lots are good security," he answered, and shut his lips tight. The banker signed the check and pushed it to me across the desk. "The bank will have to collect the money promptly on time, you know," he told dad. I spent that money with the utmost care not to waste a cent. Al and I were back in the tent with the machine. We took it apart while we waited for the supplies to come from New York. We went over the engine and got it in the best possible shape. I had the work all figured out, just how much must be finished by a certain time. The note was coming due in ninety days. I allowed six weeks to get the machine rebuilt. Then I meant to try for the cross-country record and win the Scientific American prize. There were delays. The New York shipment was routed wrong. When it finally arrived there was a mistake in it. I had to order again, and wait. Other things went wrong. We worked in that tent as I have never worked before or since. From the first dawn, as soon as it was light enough to see, we were at it. We worked until we were too tired to hold the tools. Al proved then the fine, unselfish friend he is. He had given me months of time without a cent of money in return. His clothes were as shabby as mine; half the time we had to borrow a few cents from the other boys for food. He had no time for fun, hardly any for rest....
