Not illustrated. 1915 edition. Excerpt: ... Chapter x. THAT two hundred dollars was on my mind every minute of the next three months. Dad got the money from the bank that had first refused to lend it to me. I remember, just before the banker signed the check, he looked at dad and me over the tops of his glasses for a long time, hesitating., "Mr. Smith, I ought to tell you that you are doing a very foolish thing," he said. Dad straightened up in his chair. "The lots are good security," he answered, and shut his lips tight. The banker signed the check and pushed it to me across the desk. "The bank will have to collect the money promptly on time, you know," he told dad. I spent that money with the utmost care not to waste a cent. Al and I were back in the tent with the machine. We took it apart while we waited for the supplies to come from New York. We went over the engine and got it in the best possible shape. I had the work all figured out, just how much must be finished by a certain time. The note was coming due in ninety days. I allowed six weeks to get the machine rebuilt. Then I meant to try for the cross-country record and win the Scientific American prize. There were delays. The New York shipment was routed wrong. When it finally arrived there was a mistake in it. I had to order again, and wait. Other things went wrong. We worked in that tent as I have never worked before or since. From the first dawn, as soon as it was light enough to see, we were at it. We worked until we were too tired to hold the tools. Al proved then the fine, unselfish friend he is. He had given me months of time without a cent of money in return. His clothes were as shabby as mine; half the time we had to borrow a few cents from the other boys for food. He had no time for fun, hardly any for rest....

By 1915, pioneer aviator Art Smith was as celebrated as any movie star might be today. He thrilled audiences with his barnstorming feats, doing "death spirals," sky writing, "loop-the-loops," and night flights using phosphorus fireworks. He was a consummate showman and had he not died in 1926, his name probably would be familiar to most Americans. He glamorized and popularized aviation while testing the boundaries of aeronautical principles. As a boy he longed to fly before he had ever seen an airplane. His parents believed in him, and he was fortunate to have a best friend named Al Wertman who helped him build an airplane. His fame spread around the globe and in 1916, the Japanese offered him $10,000 for a series of exhibitions. His flying skills inspired a young Wiley Post to a life of aviation. After Smith's death, when Lindbergh flew over Fort Wayne and dipped his wings, he gave credit to the "Bird Boy" Art Smith. The story of this rising star in American aviation is one of adventure, romance, scandal and history. Using Smith's own autobiographical writings, the story is also a factual account of events in early aviation. The book includes photographs and postcards in Art Smith's own handwriting mailed to Al Wertman.

WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD SHORTLISTED FOR THE CUNDILL HISTORY PRIZE 'Just as gripping as the original novels . . . As pacy and vivid as one of Wilder's own narratives, this surprising biography is immensely revealing both about Wilder and about America's founding myths' Sunday Times '"Little House" devotees will appreciate the extraordinary care and energy Fraser devotes to uncovering the details of a life that has been expertly veiled by myth' New York Times Book Review Millions of readers of the 'Little House' books believe they know Laura Ingalls Wilder - the pioneer girl who survived blizzards and near-starvation on the Great Plains as her family chased their American dream. But the true story of her life has never been fully told. Drawing on unpublished manuscripts, letters, diaries and public records, Caroline Fraser masterfully fills in the gaps in Wilder's biography, uncovering the grown-up story behind the best-loved childhood epic of pioneer life. Set against nearly a century of unimaginable change, from the Homestead Act and the Indian Wars to the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, Wilder's life was full of drama and adversity. Settling on the frontier amid land-rush speculation, her family endured Biblical tribulations of locusts and drought, poverty and want, before she left at the age of eighteen to marry Almanzo. This is where the books end, but there is so much more to tell; deep in debt after a series of personal tragedies, Laura and Almanzo uprooted themselves once again, crisscrossing the country, taking menial jobs to support the family. In middle age, she began writing a farm advice column, prodded by her journalist daughter Rose. And at the age of sixty, fearing the loss of almost everything in the Depression, she turned to children's books, recasting her extraordinarily difficult childhood as a triumphal vision of homesteading - achieving fame and fortune in the process. Laura Ingalls Wilder's life is one of the most astonishing rags-to-riches stories in American letters. Offering fresh insight and new discoveries, Prairie Fires reveals the complex woman who defined the American pioneer character, and whose artful blend of fact and fiction grips us to this day.
