La relación establecida en los siglos XV y XVI entre el poder y el arte no fue algo monolítico y homogéneo, ni los Trastámara fueron los primeros en mostrar interés artístico, pero quizá sí lo fueron en evidenciar una «especial relación» con el arte, ya una relación cambiante al final de la Edad Media, iniciando unos comportamientos que serán heredados, matizados y «sublimados» por los Reyes Católicos y amplificados por la labor de promoción artística de sus prelados y nobles. El arte se convierte en signo de distinción social con un componente devocional, asistencial o cultural en sentido amplio, que observaremos cada vez en mayor número entre los hombres y las mujeres –cada vez mejor estudiadas– del periodo. Con la llegada de la Casa de Austria, el Renacimiento y la imprenta, asistiremos a la aparición de nuevos matices en esta relación entre el arte y la Monarquía, como el peso de la emblemática asociada a la propaganda imperial o la diversificación de las intenciones promotoras. Veremos cómo el arte asociado a los monarcas es arte en palacio, pero también es arte de Corte, es una promoción que nos permite hablar del empleo del arte como espejo de poder, pero también de usos femeninos como nos recuerdan las mujeres Habsburgo, o de «gusto» artístico, el papel de los monarcas en la llegada de novedades artísticas, la imagen religiosa en la Contrarreforma, los préstamos e intercambios artísticos entre reyes y nobles o el peso de las sinergias familiares.

To rule their vast new American territories, the Spanish monarchs appointed viceroys in an attempt to reproduce the monarchical system of government prevailing at the time in Europe. But despite the political significance of the figure of the viceroy, little is known about the mechanisms of viceregal power and its relation to ideas of kingship. Examining this figure, The King's Living Image challenges long-held perspectives on the political nature of Spanish colonialism, recovering, at the same time, the complexity of the political discourses and practices of Spanish rule. It does so by studying the viceregal political culture that developed in New Spain in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the mechanisms, both formal and informal, of viceregal rule. In so doing, The King's Living Image questions the very existence of a "colonial state" and contends that imperial power was constituted in ritual ceremonies. It also emphasizes the viceroys' significance in carrying out the civilizing mission of the Spanish monarchy with regard to the indigenous population. The King's Living Image will redefine the ways in which scholars have traditionally looked at the viceregal administration in colonial Mexico.

The Art of Allegiance explores the ways in which Spanish imperial authority was manifested in a compelling system of representation for the subjects of New Spain during the seventeenth century. Michael Schreffler identifies and analyzes a corpus of "source" material--paintings, maps, buildings, and texts--produced in and around Mexico City that addresses themes of kingly presence and authority as well as obedience, loyalty, and allegiance to the crown. The Art of Allegiance opens with a discussion of the royal palace in Mexico City, now destroyed but known through a number of images, and then moves on to consider its interior decoration, particularly the Hall of Royal Accord and the numerous portraits of royalty and government officials displayed in the palace. Subsequent chapters examine images in which the conquest of Mexico is depicted, maps showing New Spain's relationship to Spain and the larger world, and the restructuring of space in and through imperial rule. Although the book focuses on material from the reign of Charles II (1665-1700), it sheds light on the wider development of cultural politics in the Spanish colonial world.

Knowledge of the pragmatici sheds new light on pragmatic normative literature (mainly from the religious sphere), a genre crucial for the formation of normative orders in early modern Ibero-America. Long underrated by legal historical scholarship, these media – manuals for confessors, catechisms, and moral theological literature – selected and localised normative knowledge for the colonial worlds and thus shaped the language of normativity. The eleven chapters of this book explore the circulation and the uses of pragmatic normative texts in the Iberian peninsula, in New Spain, Peru, New Granada and Brazil.
