Going beyond the frameworks of the anthropology of death, Articulate Necrographies offers a dramatic new way of studying the dead and their interactions with the living. Traditional anthropology has tended to dichotomize societies where death “speaks” from those where death is “silent” – the latter is deemed “scientific” and the former “religious” or “magical”. The collection introduces the concept of “necrography” to describe the way death and the dead create their own kinds of biographies in and among the living, and asks what kinds of articulations and silences this in turn produces in the lives of those affected.

When approaching the multiplicity of the spiritual experiences of healing, ethnographers are often presented with ideas of the existence of “other” worlds that may intersect with the so-called “material” or “physical” worlds. This book proposes a sensory ethnography of healing with a focus on ethnographic knowing as embedded in an embodied epistemology of healing. Epistemological embodiment signals that personal scholarly experience of the “unknown”—be it in the form of trance, or as the embodiment of an “other”—shapes the concepts of healing, body, trance, self, and matter by which ethnographers craft out analysis.

This book is the product of an endless individual and collective process of mourning. It departs from the author’s mourning for her parents, their histories and struggles in Germany as Gastarbeiter, while it also engages with the political mourning of intersectional feminist movements against feminicide inCentral and South America; the struggles against state and police misogynoir violence of #SayHerName in the United States; the resistance of refugees and migrantized people against the coloniality of migration in Germany; and the intense political grief work of families, relatives, and friends who lost their loved ones in racist attacks from the 1980s until today in Germany. Bearing witness to their stories and accounts, this book explores how mourning is shaped both by its historical context and the political labor of caring commons, while it also follows the building of a conviviality infrastructure of support against migration-coloniality necropolitics, dwelling toward transformative and reparative practices of common justice.

O presente estudo é resultado de minha Dissertação de Mestrado, desenvolvida no âmbito do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Direito da UFMG e defendida em 2023, em que pretendi investigar a proteção contra danos ocorridos após a morte do sujeito, propondo como tema problema entender e justificar a maneira mais adequada de proteger o morto e de identificar o objeto de tutela dos direitos da personalidade póstumos. Partindo das considerações tecidas pelas teorias da identidade narrativa e da situação jurídica, postulei que a proteção se faz pela constituição de uma situação jurídica socialmente relevante, composta por deveres de respeito à memória em face de circunstâncias concretas, que parte da construção de uma obra realizada em vida pelo próprio morto e se desenvolve rumo à memória da pessoa falecida e a continuação de sua história na forma contada pelas pessoas vivas, na dimensão de recepção e leitura do texto narrado. No percurso do livro, desenvolvi as temáticas da presença da pessoa falecida no contexto social-digital; da noção adequada de identidade que explicitasse essa permanência prático-social; da visão adequada do ordenamento jurídico quanto à proteção devida à pessoa falecida, por meio dos estudos sobre memória, testemunho e danos; por fim, encerrei com análise de casos de danos póstumos, em que busquei desenvolver uma estratégia argumentativa que permita a avaliação da situação, particularmente quanto às pessoas legitimadas e o período temporal de proteção.
