Years ago someone lit a match... Laura has spent most of her life being judged. She's seen as hot-tempered, troubled, a loner. Some even call her dangerous. Miriam knows that just because Laura is witnessed leaving the scene of a horrific murder with blood on her clothes doesn't mean Laura is a killer. Bitter experience has taught her how easy it is to get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Carla is reeling from the brutal murder of her nephew. She trusts no one and no thing: good people are capable of terrible deeds. But how far will she go to find peace? Innocent or guilty, everyone is carrying damage. Some are damaged enough to kill. Look what you started.

Back in PrintWorld Fire is the story of how fire and humans have coevolved. The two are inseparable, and together they have repeatedly remade the planet.“Pyne considers the evolution of fire in such diverse regions as Australia, Africa, Brazil, Sweden, Greece, Iberia, Russia, and India and then ponders Antarctica, the land without fire. As he examines changing techniques for and attitudes toward fire control, Pyne challenges our concepts of nature and wilderness and explains why the study and management of fire have tremendous environmental, cultural, and political implications.”—Booklist“A sweeping historical treatise that examines our world’s love/hate relationship with conflagration. His engrossing ideas leave bright embers in the memory.”—Outside

Challenging assumptions about the separation of high politics and everyday life, Belinda Davis uncovers the important influence of the broad civilian populace--particularly poorer women--on German domestic and even military policy during World War I. As Britain's wartime blockade of goods to Central Europe increasingly squeezed the German food supply, public protests led by "women of little means" broke out in the streets of Berlin and other German cities. These "street scenes" riveted public attention and drew urban populations together across class lines to make formidable, apparently unified demands on the German state. Imperial authorities responded in unprecedented fashion in the interests of beleaguered consumers, interceding actively in food distribution and production. But officials' actions were far more effective in legitimating popular demands than in defending the state's right to rule. In the end, says Davis, this dynamic fundamentally reformulated relations between state and society and contributed to the state's downfall in 1918. Shedding new light on the Wilhelmine government, German subjects' role as political actors, and the influence of the war on the home front on the Weimar state and society, Home Fires Burning helps rewrite the political history of World War I Germany.

Fire, fire burning bright, warm my toes, light my room. Burn my fingers or waft my prayer to heaven.Summer in the southern hemisphere is Fire time. Managed fire can be a blessing, clearing out choking undergrowth and removing pestilent rodents. Out of control fire is a different entity altogether. In the summer of 2019/2020 nearly the entire continent of Australia burned. Half a billion animals lost their lives. Hundreds of thousands of acres of habitat and agricultural land was scoured. Some of the fires were human caused. Others were the result of climate change-humanity's greedy exploitation of resources-and decades of drought.Even after the fires are out, the land still suffers. From Suzanne Newnham's strange look at how a person who hears fire perceives the conflagration, to Jack Dann's and Ann Poore's evocative poems to tales of wonder and outrage, and Sivlia Brown's and Narrelle M. Harris's poignant hopes for a better future, this anthology demonstrates the agony of a continent, but it also shows bits of dark humor and hope among the devastation.B-Cubed Press always donates a portion of each sale to charity. For this book that highlights Australian authors and authors with strong ties to the Antipodes, we will donate to WIRES, NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Inc. https: //www.wires.org.au/donate/emergency-fun

"As humans increasingly move into cities, as habitations encroach on flammable landscapes, and as climate change and invasive plants we have introduced alter those landscapes, we need more than ever an understanding of fire in the context of its role in the history of the planet. Is wildfire always a bad thing? to understand wildfire, Andrew Scott explains, we need to appreciate its history stretching back 400 million years. It was Scott who established the identity of fossil charcoal in rocks- our main clue to fires in the deep past. In this book he describes how we have in recent decades pieced together the story of fire through time. The record of fire on Earth tells us that fire has played a role in shaping the planet since vegetation spread on land. It also records evidence that wildfires increase at times of rapid climate change."--book jacket

Long a fire continent, Australia now finds itself at the leading edge of a fire epoch. Australia is one of the world’s fire powers. It not only has regular bushfires, but in no other country has fire made such an impact on the national culture. Over the past two decades, bushfires have reasserted themselves as an environmental, social, and political presence. And now they dominate the national conversation. The Still-Burning Bush traces the ecological and social significance of the use of fire to shape the environment through Australian history, beginning with Aboriginal usage, and the subsequent passing of the firestick to rural colonists and then to foresters, to ecologists, and back to Indigenes. Each transfer kindled public debate not only over suitable fire practices but also about how Australians should live on the land. The 2009 Black Saturday bushfires and the 2019–2020 season have heightened the sense of urgency behind this discussion. In its original 2006 edition, The Still-Burning Bush concluded with the aftershocks of the 2003 bushfires. A new preface and epilogue updates the narrative, including the global changes that are affecting Australia. Especially pertinent is the concept of a Pyrocene — the idea that humanity’s cumulative fire practices are fashioning the fire equivalent of an ice age.
