In my new book, Asian Nietzsche: A Book for All Civilizations, Book 1, I have attempted to re-create the "philosophical conversation" and - partly by means of humor and surprising references to popular culture, sex, and lingerie - make accessible to contemporary audiences discussions of the comparative study of ideas, religions, nations, and civilizations. This includes an inquiry into the origins of fundamental or revolutionary creativity as compared to the far more common phenomenon across societies and world history, namely, relative cultural stasis or a lack of fundamental creativity and innovation.Contents include: 1: STEVE JOBS & INNOVATION (OR, WHY DOES COUNTRY AFTER COUNTRY BELIEVE THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PRODUCE A "STEVE JOBS")2: EINSTEIN'S FAVORITE SOCIAL SCIENTIST 3: DO ASIANS LACK A CAPACITY FOR HIGH-LEVEL INNOVATION & CREATIVITY "by force of circumstances beyond their control"?4: "Conversations don't have to be so linear and phallologocentric!": ON THE SURPRISING ORIGINS OF MODERN PORNOGRAPHY IN THE DAYS OF THE SAMURAI5: DID HEINRICH HEINE ORDER CHINESE? 6: WHO IS SHINTARO ISHIHARA? 7: WHY DID THE SHOGUN'S "SHUNGA" DEPICT WOMEN AS ENJOYING SEX AS MUCH AS MEN? 8: "Do you really take all of this cultural stuff seriously? This is because writing is work, writing is labor.

In the current resurgence of interest in Heidegger, an important aspect of his thought has been neglected--namely, his long-standing interest in Asian philosophy. Heidegger and Asian Thought is the first book devoted to exploring this fascinating topic. It brings together essays twelve scholars from India, China, Japan, Germany, and the United States, most of which were written especially for this volume. The essays discuss Heidegger`s thinking in relation to Vedanta, Taoism, Zen, and Tibetan Buddhist philosophy. Heidegger`s acquaintance with Asian thought--beginning from his familiarity with the Chuang-tzu as early as 1930--is fully documented, including an account of his work on a partial translation of the Tao Te` Ching into German. This book will be of interest not only to Heidegger scholars but also to students of Asian and comparative philosophy and religion.

The post-Cold War situation has given way to a new and unprecedented constellation of global interrelations. The power constellation today is not only multi-polar, but rather, ‘chaotic’: its configuration keeps shifting and it is determined not simply by new emerging super powers, but also by any seemingly small events in non-linear modes of interaction. The interdependency between communities somehow makes significant changes unpredictable. Such an interdependent, yet chaotic, world order, in turn, raises new philosophical questions. Identity, culture and civilization cannot be understood anymore simply in terms of traditional categories. These categories are called into question through mutual interrogation and mutual enlargement of horizons, and this inevitably entails hybridization and pluralization. The Asian voices included in this book speak of recognition of and respect for the ‘otherness’, the other outside as well as inside. The writers mostly see globalization as well as their own cultural positions through dialogical imagination in which a Western philosophical framework is deployed to find out their Asian positions, and the reverse, the Asian reality is used to problematize the Western framework. Thereby this book attempts to shed light on the question of how we are to understand culture and civilization.

Leo Strauss In Northeast Asia written by Jun-Hyeok Kwak and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-23 with Political Science categories.

This book analyzes the reception of Leo Strauss and his political philosophy in Northeast Asia. By juxtaposing the central idea of Strauss’s political philosophy with the question of modernity, the contributors explore the eclectic adaptations of Strauss in Northeast Asian countries as a philosophical appropriation across cultures. Examining how Strauss’s philosophy was first introduced in Northeast Asia, the book sheds light on the similarities and differences in experiences, challenging the dominant approach which attributes various receptions of Strauss in Northeast Asia solely to sociopolitical circumstances. This book also seeks to move beyond a China-centric approach to investigate the possible transcultural appeals of Strauss’s political philosophy by exploring the cases of Japan and South Korea. Appealing to a wide network of scholars and practitioners in East Asia engaged in rethinking cultural particularities, this volume will be attractive to upper-level undergraduate students, graduate students, and advanced researchers in political philosophy, political theory, and Asian politics.

In this important and hugely ambitious book, one of the world’s leading political scientists working on China demonstrates how Western views of China are flawed because the long tradition of Western scholarship studying China views China from the Western philosophical and intellectual perspective rather than viewing China on its own terms through the lens of China’s own long-established and reputable philosophical and intellectual tradition. Providing a deep analysis of Western scholarship on China, including work from Leibniz to Marx to Weber and then to Wittfogel, and a thorough account of the evolution of China’s own thinking about governance as expressed in the practices of successive Chinese dynasties, the book goes on to examine how the current Chinese body politic fits with and is the natural outcome of China’s own long, well-thought-through and well-practiced intellectual consideration of what the nature of civilized governance should be. By focusing on philosophical and intellectual approaches rather than on theoretical or methodological ones, the book shows how the huge and increasing disconnect between non-Chinese views of China and Chinese ones has come about.
