A publicação de livros sobre história da matemática para uso didáticos pelos professores de Matemática teve sua origem no IV Seminário Nacional de História da Matemática (IV SNHM), realizado em Natal (Rio Grande do Norte), em 2001. Naquele ano forampublicados nove títulos referentes a temas variados. A receptividade dos textos, por parte de estudantes de licenciatura em matemática e por professores dos três níveis de ensino (fundamental, médio e superior), fez com que a sociedade brasileira de história da matemática levasse em frente o projeto, de modo a contribuir para a divulgação e uso dessa produção nas aulas de matemática nos diversos níveis de ensino. Com essa finalidade seguiram-se as coleções de 2003 no V SNHM em Rio Claro (SP), de 2005 em Brasília (DF), no VI SNHM, de 2007 em Guarapuava, no VII SN HM, em Belém/ Pará no VIII SNHM de 2009, em Aracaju no IX SNHM de 2011 e em Campinas no X SNHM de 2013. Para o XI SNHM de 2015, consideramos importante apresentar aos professores de Ensino Fundamental, Médio e Superior e aos estudantes de Licenciatura em Matemática de todo o Brasil, um rol mais diversificado de temas, tendo em vista o avanço dos estudos sobre História da Matemática nos diversos centros de estudos do país. Nessa perspectiva organizamos os 10 volumes na Série História da Matemática para o Ensino.
