This book explores the Higgs boson and its interactions with fermions, as well as the detector technologies used to measure it. The Standard Model of Particle Physics has been a groundbreaking theory in our understanding of the fundamental properties of the universe, but it is incomplete, and there are significant hints which require new physics. The discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012 was a substantial confirmation of the Standard Model, but many of its decay modes remain elusive. This book presents the latest search for Higgs boson decays into c-quarks using a proton-proton collision dataset collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This decay mode has yet to be observed and requires advanced machine learning algorithms to identify c-quarks in the experiment. The results provide an upper limit on the rate of Higgs boson decays to c-quarks and a direct measurement of the Higgs boson coupling strength to c-quarks. The book also discusses the future of particle physics and the need for significant improvements to the detector to cope with increased radiation damage and higher data rates at the High-Luminosity LHC. It presents the characterization of the ATLAS pixel detector readout chip for the inner detector upgrade (ITk). The chip was subjected to irradiations using X-rays and protons to simulate the radiation environment at the HL-LHC. Following the acquisition of the atomic bomb by five states, the United Nations began drafting several treaties to limit nuclear proliferation. These efforts failed, as four more states also acquired nuclear weapons. In a similar vein, an attempt to limit atomic weapons - primarily within the two superpowers - was initiated. While the number of weapons has decreased, the new bombs now being manufactured are more powerful and more precise, negating any reduction in numbers. In the field of civil nuclear use, all nuclear facilities (reactors, factories, etc.) have a limited lifespan. Once a plant is permanently shut down, these facilities must be decommissioned and dismantled. These operations are difficult, time-consuming and costly. In addition, decommissioning generates large volumes of radioactive waste of various categories, including long-lived and high-activity waste. Risks to the environment and to health are not negligible during decommissioning. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have produced numerous publications with recommendations. Each state has its own decommissioning strategy (immediate or delayed) and final plan for the site - whether it be returning it to greenfield status or obtaining a nuclear site license with centuries-long monitoring.

The Inner Tracker (ITk) system of the ATLAS experiment will be upgraded for the 2026 High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) run. The HL-LHC will operate with a center of mass energy of 14 TeV and a peak instantaneous luminosity five times higher than at present. The increased luminosity will result in roughly ten times higher radiation levels and data rates. To cope with the ATLAS requirements in terms of radiation hardness, readout speed and granularity at the HL-LHC, the replacement of the present ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) is needed. Two large-scale depleted CMOS sensors in the 150 nm LF-technology called LF-CPIX and LF-MONOPIX, developed in the framework of the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITK) upgrade for High Luminosity LHC. The work presented here shows the characterization for these three prototypes, with contributions concerning the setup development, 55Fe and 90Sr source calibration, modifications of the FPGA firmware and development of test programs. A main concern was the investigation on the radiation hardness for both the electronics and the sensor parts. We will show results concerning characterizations for these prototypes in the laboratory performance at CPPM, as well as results in multiple radiation campaigns performed at the 24 GeV IRRAD proton facility at CERN, to study the effects of Non-Ionizing Energy Loss (NIEL) and Total Ionizing Dose (TID) on the prototypes.

The high event rate delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) provides experiments with opportunities for new discoveries as well as challenges related to the large amounts of data recorded. Overcoming this requires innovative techniques in the three topics of this thesis: Data acquisition, data analysis, and data compression. In the data taking period of 2015-2018, the ATLAS experiment received 10-70 simultaneous proton-proton collision events every 25 ns. At these high event rates, the experiment relies on trigger methods which only process the interesting collision events and keep detector readout and data storage within bandwidth constraints. The Trigger Level Analysis (TLA) presented in this thesis circumvents these bandwidth constraints by using the smaller event objects reconstructed at the trigger level as input to the analysis. The trigger level objects require custom calibration schemes, one of these was developed as part of this thesis to be used in the current and next iterations of the analysis. The LHC is scheduled to be upgraded to the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and deliver 200 simultaneous proton-proton collision events. To provide the necessary resolution, readout speed, and radiation hardness, the ATLAS Inner Detector will be upgraded to the new fully silicon-based Inner Tracker (ITk). This thesis presents the work performed in developing, manufacturing, and delivering an automated quality control system for the new detector modules. Quality testing of the detector modules using this system is currently ongoing at multiple international institutes. The large amount of simultaneous events provided by the HL-LHC will also be challenging for data storage, where the amount of ATLAS generated data is projected to be 5 times larger than the storage resources. As the data are already highly compressed using lossless methods, the work in this thesis presents proof-of-principle studies using machine learning-based methods to derive lossy compression algorithms tailored to a variety of datasets. The tool developed for this purpose is made available as an open-source project called "Baler".
