Verbal intelligence has been shown to affect performance on verbal memory tests for healthy young adults. However, it is not clear that the association between verbal intelligence and memory is the same for healthy older adults because, while performance on verbal intelligence measures remains relatively stable in older age, there is significant normal age-related memory decline. In fact, the magnitude of age-related decline in verbal memory performance is so substantial that there may be a significant difference between the memory performance of individuals in their early (i.e. 80 to 84) versus late (i.e. 85 to 89) eighties. This raises the possibility of an interactive effect between verbal intelligence and age on verbal memory for individuals in their 9th decade. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of verbal intelligence and age on verbal memory test performance in the elderly. One hundred thirty-nine healthy participants aged 80-89 were divided into four groups based on Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale - III (WAIS-III) Vocabulary scaled score: average/below average (11) and above average ( 12); and age: early 80's (80 to 84) and late 80's (85 to 89). The groups were compared on Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) total and delayed recall scores. Results from two-way ANOVA indicated a significant interaction effect between age and Vocabulary score for the RAVLT total score. ANOVA pairwise comparisons revealed a between groups difference that is inconsistent with the established presence of age-related memory decline that yields the current data invalid and ungeneralizable: for individuals in the average and below intelligence group, the younger age group performed worse than the older age group. Two-way ANOVA results indicated no interaction or main effects for age or Vocabulary score on RAVLT delay score. Other significant and marginal findings are discussed which argue for further research on the use of different norms for people aged 80-84 and 85-89, though no finding on the applicability of the IQ - memory relationship can be discussed due to selection bias.

The present study examined age related memory loss (ARML) using a nonverbal paradigm. A picture fragment completion task was employed to compare the explicit memory and implicit memory performance of a young and an old group. Explicit memory was indexed by free recall of pictures, while implicit memory was indexed by skill learning and perceptual learning. Results showed that explicit memory performance was impaired in the older group. In terms of implicit memory, no skill learning performance differences were found between groups. A between groups difference in perceptual learning was found, however, in favour on the young group. The performance differences on perceptual learning were attributed in part to a contamination of implicit memory by explicit memory. After accounting for explicit memory influence, age differences in perceptual learning were still evident. Decreased frontal lobe functioning has been proposed as one of the factors which contributes to ARML. This is supported in the current study, with frontal lobe functioning performance being predictive of both explicit memory (free recall) and implicit memory (perceptual learning).

"One of the major complaints from older adults -aged 60 years and above, is that their memory for past personal experiences (episodic memory) is declining with age. Older adults have difficulty in remembering the content and context of past events (Craik, 2002). Several neuropsychological and neuroimaging findings have associated an abnormal frontal lobe functioning to impairments in episodic memory, with age (Tulving, et al., 1988; Moscovitch & Winocur, 1992; Rajah & D'Esposito, 2005). Recently, age-related decreases in the dopaminergic neurotransmission system have also been related to an altered frontal lobe functioning and working memory in the elderly (Backman, 2007, 2011; Erixon-Lindroth et al, 2005). Indeed, the prefrontal cortex is the brain structure that not only suffers a marked loss of grey matter (Salat et al, 1999; Raz & Rodrigue, 2006) but also, of D1 dopamine receptors (Suhara et al, 1991, Rinne et al, 1990; Backman et al, 2011). Nonetheless, the contribution of the D1 receptors to episodic memory and prefrontal functioning, as well as the interaction between working memory and prefrontal functioning as possibly underlying episodic memory remains to be clarified. The goals of this thesis were: to examine the association between the D1 receptors within the prefrontal cortex and episodic memory; to examine the association between the D1 receptors within the prefrontal cortex and the prefrontal executive functioning; and to examine the association between the prefrontal executive functioning and episodic memory. Thus, the neural correlates -D1 receptor density, and the prefrontal cognitive processes -working memory, executive functioning, probably underlying the age-related changes in episodic memory are explored. As expected, older adults exhibited impairments in episodic memory recognition and spatial context memory but not in working memory when compared to a younger cohort. Older adults presented a reduced D1 receptor density within the prefrontal cortex, and some areas seem to be more vulnerable to this loss. The D1 receptor density was not associated to the performance on episodic memory tasks, but the cortical thickness of the left inferior frontal gyrus, a variable of no interest, was related to spatial context memory, an association that was not predicted a priori. Furthermore, the age-related loss of the D1 receptor density was negatively associated with the performance on working memory tasks. No other prefrontal cognitive processes were correlated to episodic memory performance. " --

Working Memory Capacity written by Nelson Cowan and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-14 with Psychology categories.

The idea of one's memory "filling up" is a humorous misconception of how memory in general is thought to work; it actually has no capacity limit. However, the idea of a "full brain" makes more sense with reference to working memory, which is the limited amount of information a person can hold temporarily in an especially accessible form for use in the completion of almost any challenging cognitive task. This groundbreaking book explains the evidence supporting Cowan's theoretical proposal about working memory capacity, and compares it to competing perspectives. Cognitive psychologists profoundly disagree on how working memory is limited: whether by the number of units that can be retained (and, if so, what kind of units and how many), the types of interfering material, the time that has elapsed, some combination of these mechanisms, or none of them. The book assesses these hypotheses and examines explanations of why capacity limits occur, including vivid biological, cognitive, and evolutionary accounts. The book concludes with a discussion of the practical importance of capacity limits in daily life. This 10th anniversary Classic Edition will continue to be accessible to a wide range of readers and serve as an invaluable reference for all memory researchers.

In conclusion, the present study supports previous findings that working memory and executive functioning are a unitary construct called executive attention, which underlines late-life verbal and visual memory performance. The current study implements the use of neuropsychological tests that are more suitable for older adults in clinical rather than experimental settings and implies the importance of further understanding of the relationship between working memory and executive functioning.
