Volume B is produced after the Assembly and contains accounts of Commission Meetings which were held, together with other material. The reports included in the present volume range from outline summaries to lengthy compilations and references. Most reports are in English.

Pulsating and eccentric binary stars play a fundamentally important role in deciphering the mass distribution within stars. IAU Transactions XXIIB summarizes the work of the XXIInd General Assembly. The discourses given during the Inaugural and Closing Ceremonies are reproduced in Chapters I and III, respectively. The proceedings of the two sessions of the General Assembly will be found in Chapter II, which includes the Resolutions and the report of the Finance Committee. The Statutes, Bye-Laws and a few working rules of the Union are published in Chapter IV. The Accounts and other aspects of the administration of the Union are recorded in Chapter V, together with the report of the Executive Committee for this last triennium, and provide the permanent record for the Union in the period 1991-1994. This volume also contains the Commission reports from The Hague compiled by the Presidents of the Commissions (Chapter VI). Finally, Chapter VII contains the list of countries adhering to the Union and the alphabetical, geographical and commission membership lists of about 8000 individual members. The IAU still appears to be unique among the scientific Unions in maintaining this category of individual membership which contributes in a crucial way to the spirit and the aims of the Union.

This Symposium began with a proposal for a meeting to honour Emer itus Professor Robert Hanbury Brown on the occasion of his 80th birthday. He requested that any such meeting should be on a topic that would be of benefit to the Sydney University Stellar Interferometer (SUSI) program. With SUSI and several other high angular resolution instruments either in operation or coming on line within the next decade, and with advances in astrometry, spectroscopy and in theoretical models of stellar atmospheres and interiors, it appeared to be both appropriate and timely to hold a symposium on "Fundamental Stellar Properties: the Interaction between Observation and Theory. " The emphasis of the meeting was on the critical assessment of the qual ity, accuracy, and prospects for improvement of the observational data and theoretical models, on the outstanding problems in stellar astrophysics, and on the feasibility of achieving the observational and theoretical advances required for their solution. Invited papers comprised the major part of the oral program and the speakers responded to the challenge issued by the Scientific Organising Committee to critically review the current status and prospects for their area of expertise. The Symposium was opened by the Chancellor of the University of Sydney, Emeritus Professor Dame Leonie Kramer, who welcomed the 126 participants from 22 countries on behalf of the University. The oral program included . 52 invited reviews and papers and 10 contributed papers.

Opacity is a quantity that determines the transport of radiation through matter and is important in many problems in physics and astrophysics. To calculate opacities, one requires atomic data for a large number of processes involving the absorption and scattering of radiation. Stellar opacities are of particular interest in astrophysics because of their importance for theories of stellar structure and stellar pulsations. Taking advantage of advances in computational atomic and plasma physics and of the availability of powerful supercomputers, The Opacity Project, Volume 2: Selected Research Papers-Atomic Data Tables for S to Fe presents accurate atomic data required for opacity calculations. The work includes computation of energy levels, oscillator strengths, photoionization cross sections, and parameters for pressure broadening of spectral lines. The book uses several different methods of computation to calculate the same data, thereby providing a check on the validity of the data. Divided into two parts, the first presents seven key research papers that review available data and detail the relevant atomic data calculations while the second part provides tables of energy levels and oscillator strengths for the elements S, Ar, Ca and Fe. The Opacity Project Team is comprised of 30 experts from 13 leading international laboratories and observatories in atomic physics and astrophysics.
