In this book, leading theorists present new contributions and reviews addressing longstanding challenges and ongoing progress in spacetime physics. In the anniversary year of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, developed 100 years ago, this collection reflects the subsequent and continuing fruitful development of spacetime theories. The volume is published in honour of Carl Brans on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Carl H. Brans, who also contributes personally, is a creative and independent researcher and one of the founders of the scalar-tensor theory, also known as Jordan-Brans-Dicke theory. In the present book, much space is devoted to scalar-tensor theories. Since the beginning of the 1990s, Brans has worked on new models of spacetime, collectively known as exotic smoothness, a field largely established by him. In this Festschrift, one finds an outstanding and unique collection of articles about exotic smoothness. Also featured are Bell's inequality and Mach's principle. Personal memories and historical aspects round off the collection.

Covering 20 years of Dr Torsten Asselmeyer-Maluga's research, this book shall be viewed as a second volume to Exotic Smoothness and Physics (written in collaboration with Prof. Carl Brans).A prominent question that the author tries to find an answer to is, how does specific physics emerge from the abstract mathematics of 4-manifolds? The key idea to that question is Smooth Quantum Gravity, a theory based on very few principles and therefore easily understood. Through the application of this theory, a connection between geometry/topology and quantum physics is created. In The Wild Fractal Nature of Spacetime, Dr Torsten Asselmeyer-Maluga explains Smooth Quantum Gravity and applies it to the standard cosmological model. Through that, the inflationary expansion of the cosmos is introduced, the cosmological constant is calculated, dark matter is shown as a direct consequence and the Big Bang is described as well. The entire concept of the cosmos is based on a model of spacetime, which is based on 4 simple axioms and thus uniquely defines it. As a result, measurable quantities such as the inflation rate and the cosmological constant can be calculated and compared with the measurement results of the PLANCK mission, for instance. However, the results on inflation theory, the cosmological constant and dimensional reduction can be understood and used independently from an exotic smoothness structure — no prior knowledge on the topic is required. The author recommends his book to scientists and interested students who see the world through the lens of geometry and physics.

Space Time Colonialism written by Juliana Hu Pegues and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-11 with Social Science categories.

As the enduring “last frontier,” Alaska proves an indispensable context for examining the form and function of American colonialism, particularly in the shift from western continental expansion to global empire. In this richly theorized work, Juliana Hu Pegues evaluates four key historical periods in U.S.-Alaskan history: the Alaskan purchase, the Gold Rush, the emergence of salmon canneries, and the World War II era. In each, Hu Pegues recognizes colonial and racial entanglements between Alaska Native peoples and Asian immigrants. In the midst of this complex interplay, the American colonial project advanced by differentially racializing and gendering Indigenous and Asian peoples, constructing Asian immigrants as “out of place” and Alaska Natives as “out of time.” Counter to this space-time colonialism, Native and Asian peoples created alternate modes of meaning and belonging through their literature, photography, political organizing, and sociality. Offering an intersectional approach to U.S. empire, Indigenous dispossession, and labor exploitation, Space-Time Colonialism makes clear that Alaska is essential to understanding both U.S. imperial expansion and the machinations of settler colonialism.

The success of Newton's mechanic, Maxwell's electrodynamic, Einstein's theories of relativity, and quantum mechanics is a strong argument for the space-time continuum. Nevertheless, doubts have been expressed about the use of a continuum in a science squarely based on observation and measurement. An exact science requires that qualitative arguments must be reduced to quantitative statements. The observability of a continuum can be reduced from qualitative arguments to quantitative statements by means of information theory.Information theory was developed during the last decades within electrical communications, but it is almost unknown in physics. The closest approach to information theory in physics is the calculus of propositions, which has been used in books on the frontier of quantum mechanics and the general theory of relativity. Principles of information theory are discussed in this book. The ability to think readily in terms of a finite number of discrete samples is developed over many years of using information theory and digital computers, just as the ability to think readily in terms of a continuum is developed by long use of differential calculus.

100 Years Of Relativity Space Time Structure Einstein And Beyond written by Abhay Ashtekar and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-11-22 with Science categories.

Thanks to Einstein's relativity theories, our notions of space and time underwent profound revisions about a 100 years ago. The resulting interplay between geometry and physics has dominated all of fundamental physics since then. This volume contains contributions from leading researchers, worldwide, who have thought deeply about the nature and consequences of this interplay. The articles take a long-range view of the subject and distill the most important advances in broad terms, making them easily accessible to non-specialists. The first part is devoted to a summary of how relativity theories were born (J Stachel). The second part discusses the most dramatic ramifications of general relativity, such as black holes (P Chrusciel and R Price), space-time singularities (H Nicolai and A Rendall), gravitational waves (P Laguna and P Saulson), the large scale structure of the cosmos (T Padmanabhan); experimental status of this theory (C Will) as well as its practical application to the GPS system (N Ashby). The last part looks beyond Einstein and provides glimpses into what is in store for us in the 21st century. Contributions here include summaries of radical changes in the notions of space and time that are emerging from quantum field theory in curved space-times (Ford), string theory (T Banks), loop quantum gravity (A Ashtekar), quantum cosmology (M Bojowald), discrete approaches (Dowker, Gambini and Pullin) and twistor theory (R Penrose).
