Este trabalho tem como objetivo descrever e analisar o processo de aprendizagem de conteúdos introdutórios à álgebra de alunos considerados, pelo sistema educacional, com necessidades educacionais especiais, em uma sala de aula regular de 8o ano do ensino fundamental de escola estadual de uma cidade do Vale do Ribeira – São Paulo. Apresenta-se como referencial conceitual da área de inclusão escolar e de pontos essenciais de documentos legais e oficiais da política pública de inclusão escolar no Brasil. Os fundamentos teóricos deste trabalho são os estudos de Lev Vigotski com ênfase para os conceitos de Defectologia. Além disso, tomamos como pressupostos a Teoria dos Campos Conceituais, de Gérard Vergnaud. Utilizamos o método qualitativo descritivo com intervenções com todos os alunos da sala de aula por meio de atividades matemáticas de introdução à álgebra, com foco especial em dois alunos com necessidades educacionais especiais. Os resultados mais amplos mostram, para a classe, que houve 29,8% de acertos totais e 46,6% de acertos parciais das atividades. Em relação aos alunos foco deste estudo, cada um realizou sete atividades, devolvendo apenas uma em branco; nas demais, apresentaram acertos e respostas parciais que expressam teoremas e conceitos matemáticos menos explícitos, mas pertinentes ao processo de resolução das atividades, fato que também ocorreu com os demais alunos da sala. O desempenho dos alunos com necessidades educacionais especiais, nas atividades propostas, apresentou padrões de aprendizagem semelhantes aos demais alunos da sala, o que evidencia a existência de um grande potencial de aprendizagem deles frente aos desafios propostos.
