Professor Errol E. Harris presented the first three chapters of Atheism and Theism as public lectures at Tulane University on January 20-22, 1975. The lecture series was made possible by a grant from the Franklin J. Matchette Foundation of New York City. Those of us who had the pleasure of hearing the lectures formed the judgment that they deserved publication to reach a wider audience and to assure a more permanent reeord. We invited Professor Harris to allow us to publish his lectures in Tulane Studies in Philosophy. On his part, he de veloped the themes of the lectures into a more comprehensive and lasting work. With Professor Harris's approval, we are taking the unprecedented step of devoting Volume XXVI of Tulane Studies in Philosophy to the publication of Atheism and Theism. We are certain that it will advance the fundamentally philosophical argument surrounding theism and Christianity. We are also convinced that it will add substantialIy to the prestige of our series of annua1 volumes of philosophy, now in its twenty-sixth year. 'Ve wish to express our thanks to the Franklin J. Matchette Foundation for the original grant sup porting the lectures and to Professor Harris for presenting first the lectures and then the book. R. C. W. A. J. R.

Excerpt from Atheism and Theism A conviction of the Divine existence is wrought in the mind by an Observation of nature, and is a necessary conclusion from a consideration Of our own being. I am, and therefore thou must be, is a just inference from a settled fact, and one which commends itself to the judgment Of every re ecting mind. I have not, therefore, entered into any elaborate argument to disprove the atheistic assump. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "The harmony of religious belief with reason is a new vista which Baha'u'llah has opened for the soul of man." 'Abdu'l-Baha Six thought-provoking essays cutting through the 'jargon jungle' that permeates and distorts the current stand-off between those who believe in a God or Creator and those who reject such beliefs, in particular the increasingly popular 'New Atheists'. The book addresses the mental struggle of many sincere seekers who are trying to rationalize their convictions in this scientific age, and highlights the urgent need for dialogue between religion and science. The author draws on the writings of the Baha'i Faith, and particularly of 'Abdu'l-Baha, who in many of his writings and public speeches elaborated on the Baha'i principle of harmony between religion and science and the necessity of investigating reality with an open mind.

From the time of the thinkers of ancient Greece, the question of what can be said about the existence and nature of God has been debated by many philosophers and theologians. In Theism and Atheism: The Eternal Debate, F.F. Centore presents a broad analysis of the major positions that address the question and the thinkers who have contributed to the debate. This is an admirably lucid and thorough examination of the history of natural theology. Covering the material in a thematic rather than in a strictly chronological way, Centore draws out the key positions on topics such as the relationship of science and religion, the problem of evil, Naturalistic and Supernaturalistic theism and the dispute between essence and existence. The proponents of the various positions are considered alongside their most explicit critics. Important thinkers dealt with in this work include Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, Descartes, Pascal, Kant, Hume, Hegel, Nietzsche, Freud and Darwin. The diversity of exploration also goes beyond the Judeo-Christian tradition to look at Hinduism, Buddhism, Stoicism, Zoroastrianism, Confucianism and Classical Paganism. This work, however, is much more than a survey of the major historical arguments and rebuttals concerning God's existence and nature. Overall, it is a work by a well-established Catholic philosopher who concludes that God's existence and nature are indeed compatible with modern science, human freedom and the existence of evil in the world.

A new perspective. Defending religion as a cultural institution in the face of resurgent atheistic thought. For centuries, the theism-atheism debate has been dominated by two positions: stringent believers committed to the "yes, there is a God" argument, and atheists vehemently driven to repudiate not only God, but also religion as a cultural institution. To date, this is the first and only mainstream book in which a nonbeliever criticizes atheism and affirms religion. An Atheist Defends Religion persuasively argues that religion is overwhelmingly beneficial for humanity, regardless of whether God exists, based on a new paradigm of 10 affirmative dimensions that make up religious experience. It also puts to rest the theory that religion is behind most of the world's sectarian violence by showing that religion becomes evil when it is politicized. Readers will learn they do not have to be fundamentalists to be believers, and about the value and benefits of religion itself.

"Is there a God?" is one of those irrepressible questions that has been debated throughout human history, with scholars from opposites camps making the case for or against the existence of God. It is a never-ending debate. This book first examines the theistic arguments developed by Islamic scholar Said Nursi in the twentieth century. Although his arguments initially seem to be mere presentations of well-established theistic arguments for God--such as teleological and cosmological, and arguments from miracles and morals--it is clear that Nursi takes a fresh approach to these existing philosophical defences. The book then analyses how Nursi tackles certain atheistic arguments--such as the problem of evil and the possibility of existence without a creator--and criticism leveled against the prophets and the Qur'an.
