Frühe Ansätze der Außenpolitik deutscher Länder, die Herausbildung deutscher Nation und Einheit sowie die außenpolitischen Entwicklungen bis zur deutschen Wiedervereinigung 1990 stehen in einem grundlegenden Zusammenhang. Die Staatsbildung und nachfolgende Ausgestaltung der Außenpolitik sowie die Ausformung der »Deutschen Nation« sind aufeinander bezogen. Der Fokus des Buches liegt auf den wichtigsten Etappen der deutschen Außenpolitik seit der Frühen Neuzeit, beginnend etwa mit der Westfälischen Friedenskonferenz 1648 bis zum Prozess der Wiedervereinigung der beiden deutschen Staaten 1990. Der inhaltliche Schwerpunkt liegt hierbei auf den außenpolitischen Grundzügen, im europäischen und globalen Kontext. Gerade der innere Zusammenhang von Außenpolitik und deutscher Nation – die Hauptakteure der Außenpolitik in Westdeutschland hielten nach 1945 an der Deutschen Nation fest und trugen insoweit entscheidend zur Wiedervereinigung bei – durchzieht die verschiedenen dargestellten Epochen und erklärt die politische Situation, so wie sich diese in den Verläufen der vergangenen fünf Jahrhunderte herausgebildet hat. Hierbei werden auch die eher weniger bekannten Anfänge der Außenpolitik der deutschen Länder und ihre Bedeutung für den heutigen Föderalismus skizziert. Im Vordergrund steht das Verhältnis Deutschlands zu den weiteren europäischen Staaten, aber auch zu den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und Rußland. Beleuchtet werden die spezifischen Interessen dieser Staaten, ihre Hintergründe und (historischen) Einflußsphären, Konfliktfelder und kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen. Das Thema Außenpolitik und Nation erfährt auch aktuell weiterhin einen hohen Stellenwert.

In the face of an outpouring of research on Holocaust history, Holocaust Angst takes an innovative approach. It explores how Germans perceived and reacted to how Americans publicly commemorated the Holocaust. It argues that a network of mostly conservative West German officials and their associates in private organizations and foundations, with Chancellor Kohl located at its center, perceived themselves as the "victims" of the afterlife of the Holocaust in America. They were concerned that public manifestations of Holocaust memory, such as museums, monuments, and movies, could severely damage the Federal Republic's reputation and even cause Americans to question the Federal Republic's status as an ally. From their perspective, American Holocaust memorial culture constituted a stumbling block for (West) German-American relations since the late 1970s. Providing the first comprehensive, archival study of German efforts to cope with the Nazi past vis-à-vis the United States up to the 1990s, this book uncovers the fears of German officials-some of whom were former Nazis or World War II veterans-about the impact of Holocaust memory on the reputation of the Federal Republic and reveals their at times negative perceptions of American Jews. Focusing on a variety of fields of interaction, ranging from the diplomatic to the scholarly and public spheres, the book unearths the complicated and often contradictory process of managing the legacies of genocide on an international stage. West German decision makers realized that American Holocaust memory was not an "anti-German plot" by American Jews and acknowledged that they could not significantly change American Holocaust discourse. In the end, German confrontation with American Holocaust memory contributed to a more open engagement on the part of the West German government with this memory and eventually rendered it a "positive resource" for German self-representation abroad. Holocaust Angst offers new perspectives on postwar Germany's place in the world system as well as the Holocaust culture in the United States and the role of transnational organizations.

Um die Jahrhundertwende 1900 zeigte sich im amerikanischen offentlichen Diskurs ein bisher unbekanntes Phanomen: Das Aufkommen einer Angst vor dem Deutschen Kaiserreich als internationalem Konkurrenten mit militarischer Macht. Yannik Muck geht diesem vielschichtigen Phanomen auf den Grund und fragt nach den Verbindungen und Abhangigkeiten, die zwischen einem neu entstandenen massenmedialen System, der amerikanischen Politik im Ubergang zum progressive age und der deutschen kaiserlichen Diplomatie in den Jahren vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg bestanden. Dabei wird einerseits eine systemtheoretische Perspektive eroffnet, die auch fur die heutige Zeit wichtige Erkenntnisse uber die besonderen Beziehungen erlaubt, die zwischen dem amerikanischen Politik- und dem Mediensystem nach wie vor bestehen. Andererseits wird einem Phanomen nachgegangen, das fur die deutsche wie amerikanische Geschichte weitreichende Folgen haben sollte: Erst die Untersuchung des Aufkommens der "Deutschen Gefahr" um 1900 ermoglicht es, den Eintritt der USA in den Ersten Weltkrieg 1917 vollumfanglich zu erklaren.
