“Superb… The first critical analysis of Israel written from within... It's a deliberate act of self-awareness, exploring how a people got where they are.” — Time “The most illuminating, even-handed, candid appraisal of the contemporary Jewish condition yet to appear” — Newsweek “[A] penetrating, profound, explosive essay-analysis of the Israelis and the Jews... Elon is that very rare writer of contemporary history who can sincerely and honestly see and sympathize with the irreconcilable forces of so suicidal a death-embrace as the Israeli-Arab struggle... a moving, enlightening, stimulating book... this book is a beacon.” — David Schoenbrun, The New York Times “Amos Elon should be praised... he has written the most acute, even-handed portrait yet of the perennially controversial Israelis... he has created a portrait that is as complex as it is palpable.” — Roger Jellinek, The New York Times “An instant bestseller in Hebrew, and in English from 1971, it became required reading in schools and mirrored the lives of Israelis.” — The Guardian “[A] superb book” — The Nation “Amos Elon’s The Israelis stands out as a uniquely valuable book” — Commentary Magazine

The aim of this book is to enable the student to read, write, and speak acceptable Israeli Hebrew and to understand less complex biblical Hebrew. A unique feature is the author's use of the principles of structural analysis. For students who are not acquainted with a language other than English, he elucidates those features of the language that are unfamiliar in the structure of English. The student is trained, from the first, to read "unvocalized" script as the native reader does, and "reading clues" (word and phrase patterns) are provided for this purpose. The work is organized into sections that can be worked through in an academic year—presentation of features, text samples, exercises, grammatical synopses, and individual and comprehensive glossaries. This text may be used by teachers without specialized training in linguistics. It can be used by self-teaching students as well as by those at college level, and it will valuable for immigrants to Israel.

Argues that the human species is headed for extinction in the near future, and presents three principal elements the author believes are needed to put the Earth on the road to recovery, including the availability of reliable sources of energy to replace fossil fuels, a world culture of cooperation, and a monetary and banking system that gives government the financial flexibility to make the transition from an oil economy to something quite different.

In this captivating memoir, Jakob, a Welsh-born Australian, takes readers on a remarkable journey that begins with a troubled youth and a life-changing decision. After running into legal trouble as a teenager, his family sends him off to sea on Scandinavian ships, where Jakob finds himself working out of Brooklyn, New York, joining ships engaged in global trade. It’s the era of rock and roll, with an atmosphere of freedom, free-spiritedness, and indulgence. However, tired of the endless partying and constant financial struggle, Jakob sets his sights on a new path. He travels to England, enrolls in a navigational school, and earns his license as a ship’s deck officer. But his thirst for adventure and reinvention leads him to an unexpected destination - Israel. Jakob’s love for the kibbutz lifestyle and a young woman on the kibbutz captures his heart. However, as war disrupts the region, their relationship crumbles, and Jakob finds solace in a hippie commune on the sunny shores of Eilat. Through ups and downs, Jakob’s journey takes him across continents, from the Canadian Arctic to Thailand and beyond. His tale is one of resilience, self-discovery, and the pursuit of a meaningful life amidst the challenges and uncertainties of a rapidly changing world.

The story balanced two major issuesthe Museum of Restituted Art and the Hampton Classic. Accordingly, information was liberally secured from the related sources: those pertaining to the equestrian world and to the immense amounts of literature and numbers of organizations seeking resolutions of ownership of looted art. The Hampton Classic, this having been its forty-first year, continues to involve founding members who modestly revere its evolution as if ones own favored child and who shrink only from promoting and individually acknowledging themselves over the hundreds of other committed equestrians that have elevated the horse show to such international prominence. No such anonymity attaches to the individuals, institutions, and organizations struggling for justice regarding Nazi-looted art. Theirs is to make known to all potential claimants that they stand ready to storm the gates to rightful recovery of their legacies. Regrettably, the United States of America, home to many such claimants, has not been able to properly reconfigure the mosaic of conflicting interests that hinder justice. Despite well-meaning conferences, laws, and even institutionalized governmental efforts, America stands well behind modern Germany, for example, as an inviting beacon. Even the early Washington Conference of 1998 would plead, but neither demand nor ever enforce laws, rules, and regulations compelling museums to provide a fair and just solution to Nazi-era claimants. The 1970 UNESCO baseline principles find no receptivity here. The FBIs own National Stolen Art File (NSAF) is largely ignored by holders of Nazi assets. Vacuous files, such as that of the Nazi-Era Provenance Internet Portal (NEPIP), intended to be the sine qua nonregistry, gives the viewer a feeling of entertainment without a punch line. The ethical guidelines of the American Association of Museums (AAM) reads more like a childish time-out lecture than a serious behavioral code. What then is there to acknowledge? In a wordfailure.
