The underrepresentation of minorities in health and other professions has long cast a shadow over our nation's efforts to develop a more representative and productive society. Many programs have been developed to enlarge the presence of minorities in health careers, but these efforts have been unable to develop the infrastructure and momentum needed to produce and sustain an adequate number of minority professionals among the ranks of clinicians, researchers, and teachers. This book looks at the historical significance of this underrepresentation, presents data that define the problem, and identifies underlying factors that contribute to the failure to achieve fairness in opportunity. The volume examines programs that have made successful efforts to decrease underrepresentation and sets forth an action and research agenda for further enhancing the numbers of minorities in the health professions.

"Racial separatism, gender discrimination, and white dominance have historically thwarted black Americans' occupational aspirations. Access to medical education has also been limited, and mobility within the profession, leading to unequal access to health care. There have, however, been notable triumphs. In Against the Odds, Wilbur Watson describes successful efforts by determined individuals and small groups of black Americans, since the early nineteenth century, to establish a strong black presence in the medical profession. Changes in medical education and hospital management, desegregation of the medical establishment, and the contemporary challenges of managed-care organizations all attest to their achievements.Watson analyzes sociocultural, political, and psychological factors associated with African-American medical practice; race and gender differences in medical education and professional development; and doctor-patient relationships during and since the period of racial separatism. He discusses the policy implications of physicians' viewpoints on issues such as folk practitioners as health care providers, medical care for the poor, abortion and euthanasia, the Tuskegee syphilis experiments, and the emergence of managed-care organizations. Through in-depth interviews with older physicians and comparative analyses of their situated techniques of coping with racial discrimination and segregation, we gain insight into the effects of separatism on the minds, selves, and social interactions of African-American physicians. From there, Papa Joe had a few acting successes (Dave Chappelle show, Jamie Kennedy Experience and Disney commercials), but ultimately was left again to find success on his own.In 2010, Papa Joe started his own production company Papa Joe Networks, clothing brand-- JOE JOE LLC, and comic book brand/character--The Electric Negro. In addition to his success as an entrepreneur, Papa Joe has an incredible personal achievement; losing 275 lbs naturally. His amazing transformation gained him notoriety as a self-help individual, and he has been featured on shows such as The Doctors, Rachael Ray, and Good Day NY. He has been the Brand Ambassador for The 99 Cent Only Store, as well as The American Heart Association. PJ has successfully completed two nationwide health and wellness tours, and has been featured in the cookbook "Dadgum That's Good! And Healthy!" by John McLemore.
