A new edition of a book is warranted when the book is successful and there are many new developments in the related discipline. Both have occurred for this book during the past 7 years since its second edition. The growth and development in nuclear pharmacy and radiopharmaceutical chemistry along with the continued success of the book have convinced us to update the book; hence this third edition. This book is a ramification of my nuclear pharmacy courses offered to pharmacy students specializing in nuclear pharmacy, nuclear medicine resi dents, and nuclear medicine technology students. The book is written in an integrated form from the basic concept of atomic structure to the practical clinical uses of radiopharmaceuticals. It serves both as a textbook on nu clear pharmacy for pharmacy students and nuclear medicine technologists, and as a useful reference book for many professionals related to nuclear medicine, such as nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists. The book contains 12 chapters. Each chapter is written as comprehen sively as possible based on my personal experience and understanding. At the end of each chapter, a section of pertinent questions and problems and so me suggested reading materials are included. I have made justifiably many additions and deletions as weIl as some reorganization in this edition. Chapter 3 is entirely dedicated to instru ments for radiation detection and measurement, including brief description of gas detectors, gamma-detecting instruments, and tomographic scanners.

"Radiopharmaceuticals in Nuclear Pharmacy and Nuclear Medicine, 2nd edition," is an essential reference for nuclear pharmacy practitioners, nuclear medicine technologists, and nuclear medicine physicians. It will also be useful as a textbook in programs that educate these practitioners. The first 12 chapters cover radioactive decay, radiation detection and measurement, radiation protection and risk, radiation safety, radiation biology, licensing and regulatory controls, radionuclide production, radiopharmaceutical chemistry, radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET), the nuclear pharmacy, and quality control. Four of these chapters are written by contributing authors. Together the 12 chapters, all written by nuclear pharmacy practitioners, present the information needed for a pharmacist to become an authorized nuclear pharmacist. The remaining 11 chapters cover the diagnostic and therapeutic use of radiopharmaceuticals. Chapters on specific body systems (brain, thyroid, heart, lung, liver, spleen, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, and bone) are followed by chapters on total body procedures, monoclonal antibodies, in vivo function studies, and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. Key Features *Updates its predecessor, Radiopharmaceuticals in Nuclear Medicine Practice, to include new material in areas such as radiation biology, radiopharmaceuticals used in PET, and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals. *Features expanded coverage of nuclear medicine applications of radiopharmaceuticals useful for nuclear pharmacy practitioners. *Some 150 tables and nearly 450 figures enrich and illustrate the text, and each chapter is referenced to the primary literature. About the Authors: Richard J. Radioisotope-based molecular imaging probes provide unprecedented insight into biochemistry and function involved in both normal and disease states of living systems, with unbiased in vivo measurement of regional radiotracer activities offering very high specificity and sensitivity. No other molecular imaging technology including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can provide such high sensitivity and specificity at a tracer level. The applications of this technology can be very broad ranging from drug development, pharmacokinetics, clinical investigations, and finally to routine diagnostics in radiology. The design and the development of radiopharmaceuticals for molecular imaging studies using PET/MicroPET or SPECT/MicroSPECT are a unique challenge. This book is intended for a broad audience and written with the main purpose of educating the reader on various aspects including potential clinical utility, limitations of drug development, and regulatory compliance and approvals.

A quality health service, as defined by the World Health Organization, ‘is one which organizes resources in the most effective way to meet the health needs of those most in need, for prevention and care, safely, without waste and within higher level requirements’. As health care standards improve globally, providing an optimal service that meets international standards and public expectations requires effective quality management. The process of quality improvement aims at defining, measuring and setting quality standards, and overcoming the associated challenges that include rising costs and skills shortages. The objective of this publication is to provide a framework for quality management systems (QMSs) to be implemented, managed and sustained holistically in nuclear medicine departments. It builds upon the IAEA’s QUANUM program, which has successfully been implemented in more than 80 countries worldwide.
