Buku ini membincangkan secara komprehensif tentang program Amanah Ikhtiar Malaysia (AIM), iaitu sebuah program pembasmian kemiskinan berasaskan kredit mikro – suatu pendekatan inovatif bermodelkan konsep Bank Grameen di Bangladesh. Ia meneliti terlebih dahulu perkembangan program pembangunan luar bandar dan pembasmian kemiskinan di negara sedang membangun amnya dan Malaysia khususnnya menerusi pendekatan konvensional. Pendekatan inilah yang akhirnya membawa kepada kemunculan AIM pada lewat tahun 1980-an. AIM dilaksanakan menerusi suntikan modal kewangan kepada golongan termiskin yang membolehkan mereka menjana aktiviti-aktiviti ekonomi dan menghasilkan pendapatan. Program AIM telah berjaya meningkatkan pendapatan dan kualiti hidup para pesertanya. Kredit mikro terbukti menjadi elemen penting dalam pembangunan luar bandar. Sehubungan itu AIM juga dapat disifatkan sebagai agensi pelengkap kepada agensi-agensi kerajaan yang turut sama memperjuangkan agenda kerajaan dalam konteks Dasar Ekonomi Baru, Dasar Pembangunan Nasional dan kini Dasar Wawasan Negara iaitu memerangi kemiskinan. Maka kelahiran AIM yang sudah berusia lebih 22 tahun telah memberi sinar harapan kepada golongan termiskin untuk membolehkan mereka berusaha memerangi kemiskinan. AIM telah merevolusikan idea tentang kredit mikro di negara ini dan tidak menghairankan apabila skim kredit mikro kepada golongan miskin menjadi elemen utama dalam pembangunan ekonomi dan sosial abad ke-21 di seluruh dunia.

This is an open access book.
