Being Another Way written by Dustin Klinger and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024 with Foreign Language Study categories.

In Being Another Way, Dustin Klinger recounts the history of how medieval Arabic philosophers in the Islamic East grappled with the logical role of the copula "to be," an ambiguity that has bedeviled Western philosophy from Parmenides to the analytic philosophers of today. Working from within a language that has no copula, a group of increasingly independent Arabic philosophers began to critically investigate the semantic role that Aristotle, for many centuries their philosophical authority, invested in the copula as the basis of his logic. Drawing on extensive manuscript research, Klinger breaks through the thicket of unstudied philosophical works to demonstrate the creativity of postclassical Islamic scholarship as it explored the consequences of its intellectual break with the past. Against the still widespread view that intellectual ferment all but disappeared during the period, he shows how these intellectuals over the centuries developed and refined a sophisticated philosophy of language that speaks to core concerns of contemporary linguistics and philosophy.

Bringing feminist and world-systems theories together, this analytic anthology examines the rise of intersecting, women-centered movements that contribute to alternative development and the rise of new societies. The authors consider feminist movements and humanistic transformations that create new work and market relations, promote democracy and equality, redefine gender and sexuality, regenerate the environment, and construct nonviolent and peaceful relations. At the end of each chapter, articles by feminist theorists and practitioners on these topics are included to illustrate the analysis. Using a global, historical framework, the book shows how diverse, multicultural, and international feminist ideas can be brought together to provide a comprehensive and differentiated understanding of change.

Another Way written by Jeremy Garber and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-25 with Religion categories.

How can theologians, philosophers, and ordinary people think about the Holy Spirit in the twenty-first century? This volume offers one model: the pneumatology of minoritarian communal interpretation, the alternative creation of meaning within an oppressive majority context. Garber looks at the stories of Saul, Ezekiel, and Jesus in the Gospels; the Radical Reformers of the sixteenth century; and a contemporary group of "spiritual but not religious" artists to see how they understand the Spirit working in their lives. He weaves together the theories of John Howard Yoder, Deleuze and Guattari, and media theorists like Stanley Fish, Jeremy Stolow, and Thomas Lindlof as a theological and philosophical background to those stories. In the end, the Holy Spirit is "being weird like Jesus together"--and Garber offers some observations on what that might look like, throughout history and today.

Pilgrimages Peregrinajes written by María Lugones and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-28 with Philosophy categories.

María Lugones, one of the premiere figures in feminist philosophy, has at last collected some of her most famous essays, as well as some lesser-known gems, into her first book, Pilgrimages/Peregrinajes. A deeply original essayist, Lugones writes from her own perspective as an inhabitant of a number of different "worlds." Born in Argentina but living for a number of years in the United States, she sees herself as neither quite a U.S. citizen, nor quite an Argentine. An activist against the oppression of Latino/a people by the dominant U.S. culture, she is also an academic participating in the privileges of that culture. A lesbian, she experiences homophobia in both Anglo and Latino world. A woman, she moves uneasily in the world of patriarchy. Lugones writes out of multiple and conflicting subjectivities that shape her sense of who she is, resisting the demand for a unified self in light of her necessary ambiguities. Pilgrimages/Peregrinajes explores the possibility of deep coalition with other women of color, based on "multiple understandings of oppressions and resistances"-understandings whose logic she subjects to philosophical investigation.
