Excerpt from Belief in Christ It is not that I am under the illusion that my own beliefs, or those of other men, orthodox or unorthodox, with very few exceptions, have been actually reached purely or mainly by an argumenta tive process. They have been the result Of a complex of movements within the soul, and of influences from without it, which are largely emotional, moral and social, and not in the narrower sense intellectual. But if the resultant belief or theory is to be described as rational, that must mean that it can account for the relevant experience in its widest sense, and the facts of nature and history, better than any other theory and the best way to test the ability of any theory to do this is not mainly by attacking other theories, but by approaching the facts constructively and critically and seeing what theory appears to emerge out of their free consideration. Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Excerpt from Our Lord: Belief in the Deity of Christ We see these declarations fully developed immediately after the close of the earthly life of Jesus, in the congregation believing on him. We have a sketch of the first Pente costal sermon by Peter, the drift of which for practical religious purpose is to put di rectly the Lord Christ in place of God, the Lord. In the miraculous outpouring of the Spirit which came upon the assembled disci ples, Peter saw the fulfillment of God's prophecy by the prophet Joel (acts 2. 16 sqq.; Joel 3. I I will pour out my Spirit upon all esh. Since the prophets had held out these prospects for the last days, the last days had now begun: the great and notable day of the Lord was imminent and with it the downfall of the universe. Whoever wished to be saved must cling to God himself and thus fulfill the prophecy which the prophet gives: Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved. Who is this Lord? As a matter of course the prophet thought of the Lord of heaven and earth, of the everlasting rock upon which alone one could stand when every thing else shook; for he wrote literally: Whosoever shall invoke the name Jahveh. Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treat ment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or intro duction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Ages The substance of this book, in all of its essen tial features, was carefully read by the late Dr. A. J. Gordon, in manuscript. He urged its immediate publication, and consented to write an introduction to its pages. Before the closing chapters were completed he had passed away from his useful life. On this account his name has no connection with the book, further than this grateful acknowledgment of his encouraging words. The learned Dr. Harnack, in his History of Dogma, when speaking of the Christian's faith in God as the father of Jesus Christ, makes the following comprehensive statement: So far as this God is believed to be the omnipotent Lord of heaven and earth, the Christian religion includes a knowledge of God, of the world, and of the purpose of created things. These three spheres, then, are the proper objects of our contemplation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Salvation From Sin The End Of Christian Faith Classic Reprint written by John Humphrey Noyes and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-23 with Religion categories.

Excerpt from Salvation From Sin, the End of Christian Faith In denying that the Old Testament saints were born of God, we must not be understood as denying that they had any religion. It appears by the passage above quoted, that there are two dis tinct stages in religious experience, in the first of which men may properly be called servants of God, while yet they are not sons. It is important that this distinction should be clearly seen, and constantly kept in view. We admit, and teach, that the Old Testament saints were servants of God in the ages before Christ, and that they became sons at his coming. But what is the difference between servants and sons? Did not the Old Testament saints love God Yes and so many servants love and honor their masters, while yet there is no vital union, no blood-relationship between them. So there was no vital union between God and man, till Christ came in the flesh. Abraham was called the friend of God, and he doubtless loved God as a man loves his friend but it is not said in scripture, and it is not true, that Christ was in him that he dwelt in God, and God in him. This spiritual indwelling was hid from ages and from generations, and was manifested only after the mission of Christ. Col. 1 26, 27. It is this that brings men into blood-relationship to God, so that they are entitled to the name of sons of God. Excerpt from How to Succeed in the Christian Life What does it mean to receive Jesus Christ? It means to take Christ to be to yourself all that God offers Him to be to everybody. Jesus Christ is God's gift. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life (john 3: Some accept this wondrous gift of God. Every one who does accept this gift becomes a Child of God. Many others refuse this wondrous gift of God, and every one who refuses this gift of God perishes. He is condemned already. He that believeth on the Son is not condemned, but he that believeth not is condemned already because he hath not believed in the name of the only be gotten Son of God (john 3.
