Bend, Not Break chronicles Ping Fu's journey from China's work camps to top CEO. 'Bamboo is flexible, bending with the wind but never breaking. It suggests resilience, meaning that we have the ability to bounce back even from the most difficult times' -Ping Fu's Shanghai papa Ping Fu is one of the few women running a tech company in the US. But her story begins long before. Born on the eve of China's Cultural Revolution, she was separated from her family at the age of eight. She grew up fighting hunger and humiliation and shielding her younger sister from the vindictive teenagers of Mao's Red Guard. At twenty-five she escaped to the United States; her only resources were $80 in traveller's checks and three phrases of English: Thank you, hello, and help. Yet Ping persevered. Within a year she had completed her English qualifications and started studying computer programming, rising to run the team behind Netscape. She then founded Geomagic, a company that has literally reshaped the world, from personalizing prosthetic limbs to repairing NASA spaceships. Bend, Not Break tells the incredible personal story of a journey from imprisonment to freedom, from Mao's China to technology start-ups. It is a tribute to one woman's courage in the face of cruelty, and a valuable lesson on the enduring power of resilience. Ping Fu is President and CEO of Geomagic, Inc. A survivor of China's Cultural Revolution, she was imprisoned for her reporting on female infanticide under China's one-child policy and deported to the USA. Fu is one of the few women CEOs in technology and was named the 2005 "Entrepreneur of the Year" by Inc. Magazine. She is a member of President Obama's National Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship and an adjunct professor in computer science at Duke University.

Finalist for the Wishing Shelf Independent Book Award “An absorbing, thought-provoking, emotionally engaging, and deftly scripted multi-generational historical novel.”–Midwest Book Review “Bend, Don’t Break is a powerful, evocative novel that honors the resilience of Black women throughout history...Brown has crafted a novel that does not just recount history—it breathes life into it, making it feel immediate, urgent, and deeply personal.”—Seattle Book Review Timely and unforgettable, Bend, Don’t Break spans two centuries of American history and is a captivating testament to women’s ambition and the unbreakable bond between Black mothers and their daughters. Drawing strength from their ancestor, Aisha, a slave born free on the west coast of Africa, four Black women will do whatever is necessary to succeed—and will do even more to protect their daughters. Aisha’s granddaughter, Dinah, a plantation slave, fends off the advances of the master’s son and vows to prevent the same mistreatment of her daughter, Sarah. During the Harlem Renaissance, Augusta, an aspiring teacher, falls in love for the first time. Her mother, Julia, is determined to prevent her from getting hurt. Attorney Olivia and her news producer daughter, Nicole, both seek success and equality in the white man’s world of 1980s corporate life. And in the present day, Sha, a tech company chief information officer, turns amateur detective after her daughter’s assault. Throughout the generations, these women encounter similar challenges but face them in different ways and survive and thrive through all of it, because they bend but do not break. They demonstrate that although generational trauma can be passed down like an inheritance, so, too, can healing and resilience.

Bend Don’t Break: My Son’s Survival is a memoir filled with both desperation and hope. Austin’s mother researched. She prayed. She questioned. She did all she could think to do to help her son survive. Feeling helpless and lost, not knowing which way to turn, she trusted. She trusted traditional physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and more. Yet none were able to completely help her precious, tortured son. It wasn’t until her desperate search led her beyond the norm, that, at last, she found hope. Austin first experienced health issues in 2012 from an allergic reaction to a commonly prescribed medication. A rare, serious disorder ensued, followed by seemingly endless bouts of both mental and physical crises. For years, his mother’s top priority was to keep her youngest son alive. With every hurdle and brick wall that she navigated, she wondered why it had to be so hard. Surely others were seeking answers for their sick loved ones. In this age of information overload, where were all the answers hiding? Bend Don’t Break: My Son’s Survival is the heartfelt and profoundly personal story of a search for those answers. Its goal is to help other parents, and everyone who knows someone struggling with mental or physical health, to stand beside their loved one with love and support. You are not alone. There is hope.

These poems were written by a retired physician who had never had any experience as a professional writer. He had always had a love of poetry, but didn't have the time to pursue this endeavor. He learned early on that he had an aptitude for poetic writing. He was encouraged by his wife and many close friends who read some of his first poems. These poems cover a large range of events which could be encountered in life. The poems are encompassing enough that people from many cultural and ethnic backgrounds should be able to find them quite interesting. They are not based in totality on any specific occurrences which the author encountered. His life as an Afro- American, growing up in the South during the era of Segregation and during the Great Depression did have a great influence on his writing.

In this inspiring, practical book, Deshaun illustrates how the seven qualities of a servant leader can lead to a more successful life. I rarely find myself in the present moment due to the workings of my mind. I can speak and act as to appear present. I've gotten damn good at it. The fact remains that my mind is somewhere else. The Resilience Factor written by Karen Reivich and has been published by Harmony this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-10-14 with Self-Help categories.
Resilience is a crucial ingredient–perhaps the crucial ingredient–to a happy, healthy life. More than anything else, it's what determines how high we rise above what threatens to wear us down, from battling an illness, to bolstering a marriage, to carrying on after a national crisis. Everyone needs resilience, and now two expert psychologists share seven proven techniques for enhancing our capacity to weather even the cruelest setbacks. The science in The Resilience Factor takes an extraordinary leap from the research introduced in the bestselling Learned Optimism a decade ago. Just as hundreds of thousands of people were transformed by "flexible optimism," readers of this book will flourish, thanks to their enhanced ability to overcome obstacles of any kind. Karen Reivich and Andrew Shatté are seasoned resilience coaches and, through practical methods and vivid anecdotes, they prove that resilience is not just an ability that we're born with and need to survive, but a skill that anyone can learn and improve in order to thrive. Readers will first complete the Resilience Questionnaire to determine their own innate levels of resilience. Then, the system at the heart of The Resilience Factor will teach them to: • Cast off harsh self-criticisms and negative self-images • Navigate through the fallout of any kind of crisis • Cope with grief and anxiety • Overcome obstacles in relationships, parenting, or on the job • Achieve greater physical health • Bolster optimism, take chances, and embrace life In light of the unprecedented challenges we've recently faced, there’s never been a greater need to boost our resilience. Without resorting to feel-good pap or quick-fix clichés, The Resilience Factor is self-help at its best, destined to become a classic in the genre.
