The story of the benzodiazepines is a fascinating one: the synthesis of a long series of inert compounds and the abandonment of the project: months later, the renewal of the project and the discovery that this compound R05-0690 (Librium ®) was a sedative and muscle relaxant in laboratory animals: the recognition that its postulated structure was wrong and that it was in fact a member of an entirely new chemical class: the excitement caused by the discovery of the powerful taming effect of the drug in wild animals: the even greater excitement in medical circles when its dramatic anxiety relieving effects were cstablished in humans: the subsequent enormous world wide usc of drugs of the benzodiazepine group. I have reason to know the story well for during that period I worked in various capacities in research, marketing and manage ment in the British subsidiary of F. Hoffmann-Ia Roche. It was during this period that I became interested in whether dependence on benzodiazepines could occur and if so to what extent, but felt that this could be examined best from outside the concern. Having now retired from Roche back to academic medicine I have taken the opportunity to examine and analyse the evidence.

Increase your awareness of the relative addiction liabilities of various drugs and drug classes that are commonly abused. A timely and masterful new book, Addiction Potential of Abused Drugs and Drug Classes clarifies, in contemporary terminology, the state of addiction liability of cocaine, opiates, alcohol, sedative-hypnotics, nicotine, anxiolytics, marijuana, inhalants and anesthetics, and PCP and hallucinogens--the nine drugs that are most abused today. Authorities combine their research expertise with the available scientific literature to evaluate those factors which contribute to the addictive qualities of drugs. Specific chapters highlight the positive and negative reinforcement qualities that make drugs rewarding, focus on the two major subtypes of alcoholics, and cover the neuroanatomical and neurochemical bases of psychological dependence, the greatest contributing factor to drug addiction. An essential new resource for scientists, clinicians, and administrators, Addiction Potential of Abused Drugs and Drug Classes also highlights those areas where more work is needed in order to understand how individual drugs affect the processes of dependence, tolerance, and addiction, so that adequate treatment of these disorders can be discovered. The book was written for teachers and researchers in the chemical dependency field, to provide an up-to-date review of the literature. In addition, physicians, nurses, and pharmacists will find the book to be valuable as an update on the relative addiction strengths of abused drugs. Finally, treatment counselors and professionals with some knowledge of physiology and pharmacology will be interested in the book because of its relevance to the clinical treatment of chemically-dependent patients.

... there is scarcely any agent which can be taken into the body to which some individuals will not get a reaction satisfactory or pleasurable to them, persuading them to continue its use even to the point of abuse ... Eddy (1965) Dependence is one of the major problems of our modern society both in industrialized and developing nations. There is, however, nothing new in man's dependence on drugs. For many centuries past, there can be few people throughout the world who do not 'overuse', 'misuse' or 'abuse' some drugs. For many the drugs that are 'overused' are caffeine [from tea or coffee), nicotine [from tobacco) or alcohol [from beer, wine or spirits), all socially accepted normal ingredients of everyday life in most communities. For a prescribed medical smaller group 'misuse' concerns commonly substances, such as barbiturates, amphetamines. For an even smaller group there is the less socially acceptable 'abuse' of specific drugs such as morphine and related analgesics, cannabis, or hallucinogens.

The late Professor Michael Shepherd was one of the most eminent and respected international figures in psychiatry. His contributions to the field in general were enormous but it is probably in epidemiological and social psychiatry that his work has had the greatest influence. Originally published in 1989, this volume of essays, written specifically in Professor Shepherd’s honour, is concerned with the scientific approach to epidemiological psychiatry. The distinguished contributors, many of whom were close colleagues or former students, were drawn from a conspicuously wide range of scientific disciplines, medical and non-medical, and their contributions reflect the far-reaching applications of epidemiological methods to mental health problems.
