Can infections cause Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, Lou Gherig's Disease and mental illness? Yes, but not just the infections. The body's unique defense against these infections plays a role. This is but one of the startling facts uncovered in Moyer's third book, Beyond Mental Illness. Moyer is a retired licensed clinical social worker with a lifetime of professional experience dealing with mental illness. He has been free to follow the research independent of the cultural limitations that might inhibit other investigators. Moyer's bipolar odyssey began with a novel exploration of factors contributing to his father and son's bipolar disorder. His first book, Too Good to be True? Nutrients Quiet the Unquiet Brain, addressed, among other things, the role of nutrients in treating mental disorders. In Beyond Mental Illness, that odyssey has now morphed into an exploration of factors contributing to mental illness as well as other physical disorders. In this book, Moyer provides a perspective beyond the standard DSM-5 diagnoses and even the very concept of mental illness. The stove-piped diagnoses dominating current medical practices are obsolete. While the medical establishment resists the need for major reformation, the public is beginning to demand science-based diagnoses and treatments. Here Moyer outlines deficiencies in current diagnostic systems that consign many to a lifetime of chronic illness. Their illnesses are not being properly diagnosed and treated. Since the publication of Beyond Mental Illness in 2014, a plethora of academic research in some of the best journals has validated some of his hypotheses. The key for more effective treatments is not to be found in drugs that mitigate downstream biological processes. The key is to identify and treat the diagnosable and treatable upstream biological processes.

Psychiatry Morning Report: Beyond the Pearls is a case-based reference that covers the key material included on the USMLE Step 2 and Step 3, as well as the psychiatry clerkship. Focusing on the practical information you need to know, it teaches how to analyze a clinical vignette in the style of a morning report conference, sharpening your clinical decision-making skills and helping you formulate an evidence-based approach to realistic patient scenarios. Each case has been carefully chosen and covers scenarios and questions frequently encountered on the USMLE/psychiatry boards, shelf exams, and clinical practice, integrating both basic science and clinical pearls. "Beyond the Pearls" tips and secrets (all evidence-based with references) provide deep coverage of core material. "Morning Report"/"Grand Rounds" format begins with the chief complaints to the labs, relevant images, and includes a "pearl" at the end of the case. Questions are placed throughout the case to mimic practical decision making both in the hospital and on the board exam. Introductory chapters discuss practical psychiatry skills for daily functioning including taking a history, presenting and writing a note, briefly reviewing psychopharmacology, and ethical considerations. Written and edited by experienced teachers and clinicians; each case has been reviewed by board certified attending/practicing physicians.

This text clearly presents a multitude of variables that potentially affect the results of neuropsychological tests. THe chapter authors, all noted experts in their respective fields, begin with a general discussion of neuropsychological constructs known to impact performance on neuropsychological tests, including demographics, personality, and sociocultural factors. They then present an empirical approach to assessment. They focus on the disorders under discussion (not solely the tests that might be used in diagnosis) and reflect the contributions the field has made to detecting differences in disorders that have neurological underpinnings. The disorders reviewed include dementia, HIV-related syndromes, adult seizure disorders, toxic exposure, mild to severe brain injury, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Chronic Fatigue Syndrome written by Institute of Medicine and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-16 with Medical categories.

Myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are serious, debilitating conditions that affect millions of people in the United States and around the world. ME/CFS can cause significant impairment and disability. Despite substantial efforts by researchers to better understand ME/CFS, there is no known cause or effective treatment. Diagnosing the disease remains a challenge, and patients often struggle with their illness for years before an identification is made. Some health care providers have been skeptical about the serious physiological - rather than psychological - nature of the illness. Once diagnosed, patients often complain of receiving hostility from their health care provider as well as being subjected to treatment strategies that exacerbate their symptoms. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome proposes new diagnostic clinical criteria for ME/CFS and a new term for the illness - systemic exertion intolerance disease(SEID). According to this report, the term myalgic encephalomyelitis does not accurately describe this illness, and the term chronic fatigue syndrome can result in trivialization and stigmatization for patients afflicted with this illness. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome stresses that SEID is a medical - not a psychiatric or psychological - illness. This report lists the major symptoms of SEID and recommends a diagnostic process. One of the report's most important conclusions is that a thorough history, physical examination, and targeted work-up are necessary and often sufficient for diagnosis. The new criteria will allow a large percentage of undiagnosed patients to receive an accurate diagnosis and appropriate care. Beyond Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome will be a valuable resource to promote the prompt diagnosis of patients with this complex, multisystem, and often devastating disorder; enhance public understanding; and provide a firm foundation for future improvements in diagnosis and treatment.
