Over the past few decades, maternal childbirth injuries have become a potent symbol of Western biomedical intervention in Africa, affecting over one million women across the global south. Western-funded hospitals have sprung up, offering surgical sutures that ostensibly allow women who suffer from obstetric fistula to return to their communities in full health. Journalists, NGO staff, celebrities, and some physicians have crafted a stock narrative around this injury, depicting afflicted women as victims of a backward culture who have their fortunes dramatically reversed by Western aid. With Beyond Surgery, medical anthropologist Anita Hannig unsettles this picture for the first time and reveals the complicated truth behind the idea of biomedical intervention as quick-fix salvation. Through her in-depth ethnography of two repair and rehabilitation centers operating in Ethiopia, Hannig takes the reader deep into a world inside hospital walls, where women recount stories of loss and belonging, shame and delight. As she chronicles the lived experiences of fistula patients in clinical treatment, Hannig explores the danger of labeling “culture” the culprit, showing how this common argument ignores the larger problem of insufficient medical access in rural Africa. Beyond Surgery portrays the complex social outcomes of surgery in an effort to deepen our understanding of medical missions in Africa, expose cultural biases, and clear the path toward more effective ways of delivering care to those who need it most.

Surgical Decision Making written by Rifat Latifi and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-30 with Medical categories.

This text provides a comprehensive and state-of-the-art overview of the major issues specific to the surgical decision-making process. These include patient’s anatomy and pathophysiology as well as the magnitude of the injury at hand, the surgeon's own physiologic and mental status, training and experience, and many other factors such as creativity, leadership skills, and overall "biochemistry" of the environment. The text reviews theoretical as well as objective information that surgeons use to make intraoperative decisions in situations, often with very limited data; decisions that will decide between a patient's living or dying, such as in trauma surgery and other complex surgeries. How surgeons choose one technical approach over another in these situations is covered. This book fills a critical need for resource materials on these topics and includes both theoretical as well as practical presentations of many typical patients seen in operating rooms around the world. Surgical Decision Making: Beyond the Evidence Based Surgery is written by academic and clinical practicing surgeons that face intraoperative decision situations on a daily basis and therefore provides a unique and valuable resource in the field for surgeons currently in training and for those already in clinical or research practice.

The Massachusetts General Hospital, known as the MGH, which Harvard medical students said stood for Mans Greatest Hospital, was the most sought-after surgical training program in the United States. It was the first-choice internship for fourth-year Harvard students going into surgery and for students from other U.S. medical schools as well. In To Fruit Street and Beyond: The Massachusetts General Hospital Surgical Residency, author Dr. Fredric Jarrett shares his recollections from when he and his colleaguesinterns and residentstrained at this hospital. It was the end of an era, now long past, when general surgery was predominant and all-inclusive. When he began his internship, general surgery included thoracic, cardiac, vascular, plastic, transplant, head and neck tumor surgery, and gynecology. Eight years later, when he finished his residency, additional specialty training had been established in most of these areas. Engaging, entertaining, and enlightening, this memoir offers insight into the lives of housestaff and medical care at one of the United States most prestigious hospitals for medical and surgical training.

Surgery is no longer necessary for many injuries, ailments, and conditions for which it used to be the only option. It is invasive and unpredictable, and recuperation is often slow and painful. Surgery does not guarantee healing and can leave patients vulnerable to serious infections. The bottom line is that the natural healing mechanisms of the body are responsible for repairing and mending any injury or condition. From shoulders to ankles, Dr. Lazar's patients have experienced firsthand the incredible healing power of the combination of modern medicine and the body's natural healing processes. More than one thousand of his patients have benefited from platelet-rich plasma therapy, where a patient's platelets are extracted from their blood and when necessary combined with stem cells from their abdominal fat or bone marrow, and re-injected into the injured site. The results of the platelet-rich plasma treatments speak for themselves: baseball pitchers are back on the mound a few weeks after being benched with shoulder injuries. Tennis players sidelined with tennis elbow are able to again hit shots without pain. Everyday people suffering from debilitating knee pain are now walking with ease. People everywhere, in all walks of life, are gaining full mobility and improved quality of life faster-without surgery.
