Historical dialogue analysis is a new branch of historical pragmatics. The papers of this interdisciplinary volume contribute to charting the developing field by presenting a survey of recent research from the different traditions of English, German and Romance language studies. Both the introductory paper by the editors and the individual papers deal with fundamental theoretical questions, e.g. the question of types of historical developments in dialogue forms, and methodological problems, e.g. the finding and interpretation of relevant data. The fifteen case studies presented in this volume provide a wide range of new data. The range of topics includes the pragmatic form of 16th century religious controversies in Germany, forms of polite answers in Early Modern German conversation culture, forms of dialogue in Early Modern English medical writing, learning English through dialogues in the 16th century, structures of bargaining dialogues in Late Medieval French, and reflections of spontaneous dialogue in Early Romance texts.

Women And Power At The French Court 1483 1563 written by Susan Broomhall and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Courts categories.

Women and Power at the French Court, 1483--1563 explores the ways in which a range of women " as consorts, regents, mistresses, factional power players, attendants at court, or as objects of courtly patronage " wielded power in order to advance individual, familial, and factional agendas at the early sixteenth-century French court. Spring-boarding from the burgeoning scholarship of gender, the political, and power in early modern Europe, the collection provides a perspective from the French court, from the reigns of Charles VIII to Henri II, a time when the French court was a renowned center of culture and at which women played important roles. Crossdisciplinary in its perspectives, these essays by historians, art and literary scholars investigate the dynamic operations of gendered power in political acts, recognized status as queens and regents, ritualized behaviors such as gift-giving, educational coteries, and through social networking, literary and artistic patronage, female authorship, and epistolary strategies.

An argumentation and debate textbook for the digital age. Composing Arguments combines traditional and contemporary theory with the online argument mapping tool Debategraph. This edition covers basic concepts regarding the definition and composition of arguments. The theory focuses on informal logic and is heavily influenced by Stephen Toulmin and Ludwig Wittgenstein, but traces the roots of argumentation theory to Aristotle. The first half of the textbook includes explanations of the syllogism, enthymeme, and the Toulmin model. Additionally, there are images of argument maps to illustrate the concepts, as well as exercises for students to use for studying. The second half of the textbook has step-by-step instructions for using Debategraph, complete with assignments that have been tried and tested in the classroom. This book represents the next step in argumentation and debate instruction. Use it for the class, or for instruction for competitive debate.

The Origins Of Greek Thought written by Jean-Pierre Vernant and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984 with History categories.

Jean-Pierre Vernant's concise, brilliant essay on the origins of Greek thought relates the cultural achievement of the ancient Greeks to their physical and social environment and shows that what they believed in was inseparable from the way they lived. The emergence of rational thought, Vernant claims, is closely linked to the advent of the open-air politics that characterized life in the Greek polis. Vernant points out that when the focus of Mycenaean society gave way to the agora, the change had profound social and cultural implications. "Social experience could become the object of pragmatic thought for the Greeks," he writes, "because in the city-state it lent itself to public debate. The decline of myth dates from the day the first sages brought human order under discussion and sought to define it.... Thus evolved a strictly political thought, separate from religion, with its own vocabulary, concepts, principles, and theoretical aims."
