Die Gesellschaft ist im Bilde. Ästhetische Erfahrung und soziologische Hermeneutik In den Anfangsgründen der Gesellschaftstheorie nimmt nicht die Kunst, sondern das Recht einen prominenten Platz ein. Gerade weil sich Soziologie um das Problem sozialer Ordnung zentriert und organisiert, gerinnt eine Gesellschaftstheorie, die den primären Integrationsmodus von Recht postuliert, zu einer mehr oder minder impliziten Rechtsanalyse. Dies habe ich in »Gesellschaftstheorie 1 und Recht« insbesondere anhand der Theoriebeiträge von Marx, Durkheim und Weber im Detail nachzuzeichnen versucht. In Fortführung einer Suche nach den juridischen Ursprüngen des soziologischen Denkens möchte ich nunmehr untersuchen, welchen systematischen Stellenwert Kunst und Alltagsästhetik in den Entwürfen zum Verständnis der Moderne einnimmt. Neben Georg Simmel ist Emile Durkheim besonders aufschlußreich. Ver schließt seine Kritik des Ästhetizismus der Soziologie den Zugang zu ästhetischen Phänomenen oder liefert gerade der juridisch und religionssoziologisch argumentierende Durkheim ein Instrument, der Kunst einen deutlichen Platz in der Gesellschaftstheorie anzu weisen? Auch in Webers Bild des okzidentalen Rationalismus sind der Stellenwert der Kunst und die Bedeutung der Ästhetik für das All tagshandeln unterbelichtet Schließlich ist Webers Projekt einer So ziologie der Kultur-und Kunstinhalte nicht mehr zur Ausführung ge langt. Die Filme der "Zweiten Moderne", von den 1980er Jahren bis zur Gegenwart, stehen im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Untersuchung. Der Film der Zweiten Moderne knüpft an die filmische Moderne und Postmoderne an, entwickelt aber zugleich Konzepte, die über diese beiden "Epochen" hinausreichen. Er baut auf der Moderne (Selbstreflexivität) und der Postmoderne (Stilmischung) auf und entwickelt doch eine eigenständige Reflexivität, die klassische Narration und moderne Selbstreflexivität nebeneinander herlaufen lässt und in paradoxen Figuren miteinander kombiniert. Einige wichtige Konzepte des modernen und postmodernen Films werden in der vorliegenden Untersuchung in jeweils zwei exemplarischen Interpretationen ausgewiesen. Dabei liegt der Schwerpunkt in der näheren Betrachtung unterschiedlichster Werke wie 'Erbarmungslos' (Clint Eastwood), 'The Straight Story' (David Lynch), 'The Player' (Robert Altman), 'Irma Vep' (Olivier Assayas) und 'Swimming Pool' (Francois Ozon). Diese Filme haben alle gemeinsam, dass sie sowohl klassische und moderne filmische Formen als auch Bewegungs- und Zeitbild (Gilles Deleuze) zusammenführen, ohne das eine dem anderen zu unterwerfen. Daraus entstehen neue Bildtypen, die sich von der klassischen Erzählweise, aber auch von der Moderne und sogar von der Postmoderne entfernen. This thought-provoking and original book argues that hyperimages—calculated displays of images on walls or pages—have played a major role in the history of art. In exhibitions, illustrated art books, and classrooms, artworks or their photographic reproductions are arranged as calculated ensembles that have their own importance. In this volume, Felix Thürlemann develops a theory of this type of image use, arguing that with each new gathering of images, an art object is reinterpreted. These hyperimages have played a major role in the history of art since the seventeenth century, and the main actors of the art world are all hyperimage creators. In part because the hyperimage is not permanently available, this interplay of images has been largely unexplored. Through case studies organized within three groups of producers—collectors and curators, art historians, and artists—Thürlemann proposes a theory of the hyperimage, explores the semiotic nature of this plural image use, and discusses the arrangement and interpretation of such pictures in order to illuminate the phenomenon of Western image culture from the beginning of the seventeenth century until today. His analysis of the ways in which images are assembled and associated provides a crucial context for the explosive present-day deployment of images on digital devices.
