"William Henry Gates III: Bill Gates A Biography" offers a comprehensive and engaging exploration of one of the most influential figures of our time. This biography delves into the three distinct yet interconnected phases of Bill Gates's life: the brilliant technologist who co-founded Microsoft and revolutionized personal computing, the fierce business tycoon who built one of the world's most powerful corporations, and the ambitious philanthropist dedicated to solving humanity's most intractable problems. It traces his journey from a curious Seattle teenager captivated by early computers to a global statesman shaping critical debates on health, poverty, and climate change. The book covers his formative years, including his time at Lakeside School where he met Paul Allen and his early forays into programming with Traf-O-Data. It details the audacious founding of Microsoft, the strategic brilliance behind the MS-DOS deal with IBM that cemented Microsoft's industry dominance, and the marketing phenomenon of Windows 95 that brought personal computing to the masses. The biography also examines his demanding leadership style, the challenging antitrust battle, and his profound shift towards philanthropy, including the establishment and evolution of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, his historic partnership with Warren Buffett, and the creation of Breakthrough Energy to tackle climate change. This book provides unique value by weaving together these disparate elements of Gates's life into a cohesive narrative, revealing an underlying "source code" of intense intellectual curiosity, a data-driven problem-solving approach, and a profound belief in scalable systems. Unlike other biographies, it leverages newly released information, such as insights from Gates's upcoming 2025 memoir, Source Code: My Beginnings, offering a fresh, personal perspective on his early life, including his self-assessment of potentially being on the autism spectrum. This biography not only chronicles the events of his life but also analyzes how his cognitive style and foundational experiences shaped his unparalleled impact across technology, business, and global humanitarian efforts. It highlights the strategic consistency in his approach to complex challenges, whether writing code for a new operating system or designing a global health initiative. A NEW YORK TIMES EDITORS’ CHOICE ‘Nobody who comes away from reading The Bill Gates Problem will look at him in the same way’ The Times You know him as the founder of Microsoft; the philanthropic, kind-hearted billionaire who has donated endless funds to good causes around the world. But there’s another side to Bill Gates. In this fearless, groundbreaking investigation, Tim Schwab offers readers a counter-narrative, one where Gates has used his monopolistic approach in business to amass a stunning level of control over public policy, scientific research and the news media. Whether he is pushing new educational standards in America, health reforms in India or industrialized agriculture in Africa, Gates’s unbridled social experimentation has shown itself to be not only undemocratic, but also ineffective. All of which begs the question: why should the super rich be able to transform their wealth into political power, and just how far can they go? 'An extraordinary and detailed work of investigative journalism' The Telegraph

Coding Literacy written by Annette Vee and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-28 with Computers categories.

How the theoretical tools of literacy help us understand programming in its historical, social and conceptual contexts. The message from educators, the tech community, and even politicians is clear: everyone should learn to code. To emphasize the universality and importance of computer programming, promoters of coding for everyone often invoke the concept of “literacy,” drawing parallels between reading and writing code and reading and writing text. In this book, Annette Vee examines the coding-as-literacy analogy and argues that it can be an apt rhetorical frame. The theoretical tools of literacy help us understand programming beyond a technical level, and in its historical, social, and conceptual contexts. Viewing programming from the perspective of literacy and literacy from the perspective of programming, she argues, shifts our understandings of both. Computer programming becomes part of an array of communication skills important in everyday life, and literacy, augmented by programming, becomes more capacious. Vee examines the ways that programming is linked with literacy in coding literacy campaigns, considering the ideologies that accompany this coupling, and she looks at how both writing and programming encode and distribute information. She explores historical parallels between writing and programming, using the evolution of mass textual literacy to shed light on the trajectory of code from military and government infrastructure to large-scale businesses to personal use. Writing and coding were institutionalized, domesticated, and then established as a basis for literacy. Just as societies demonstrated a “literate mentality” regardless of the literate status of individuals, Vee argues, a “computational mentality” is now emerging even though coding is still a specialized skill.

You know absolutely nothing about The Internet, even if you think you do. Whether an expert or a ""newber,"" Post-Modem is guaranteed to tell you something you would have never known about The Internet without picking up this book. How did housewives in the 50s combine a turntable and a HAM radio to get Wi-Fi? What is the connection between ""Mad Men""'s Jon Hamm and AskJeeves? (hint: you might want to ask Jon Hamm!) Is Richard Dawkins real? How did Stalin create the first LOLCat via Sputnik? Post-Modem is the unabridged, unedited history of the Internet you've always needed. Rob Kutner (The Daily Show, Conan) says: "With an inspired mix of real historical texture, ballsy anachronism, countless whip-smart jokes, and spot-on 'archival photos, ' Jason Klamm spins a delightful John Hodgman-esque look at the Internet throughout history and today."
