Jeder von uns hat Erfahrungen mit den Beziehungen zu Eltern, Geschwistern, Verwandten, Freunden oder Nachbarn. Ein Großteil der Freuden und Sorgen resultiert aus diesen mehr oder weniger engen Bindungen. So erfüllt es uns mit Freude, gemeinsam mit einem guten Freund auszugehen, oder wenn die Mutter tröstend die Arme um die Schulter legt. Andererseits machen wir uns Sorgen, wenn die Schwester Liebeskummer hat oder trauern, wenn die Großeltern sterben. Beziehungen nehmen somit im menschlichen Leben eine wichtige Rolle ein, egal ob wir sie neu knüpfen oder beenden. Doch die wohl wichtigste und vielleicht auch intensivste menschliche Bindung ist die zwischen Mutter und Kind. Schon vor der Geburt bilden die beiden eine Einheit, die einzigartig ist. Der Fötus wird im Mutterleib mit Nahrung und Sauerstoff versorgt. Zudem erfährt er Geborgenheit und Wärme. Später ist es die Aufgabe der Mutter dieses Gefühl von Sicherheit und Liebe aufrechtzuerhalten. Sie wird das Kind pflegen und umsorgen, mit ihm spielen, es wickeln und ernähren, es auf den Arm nehmen, liebevoll streicheln und wiegen. Viele Forscher aus den verschiedensten Fachbereichen haben sich seit Beginn des letzten Jahrhunderts mit der Beziehung zwischen Mutter und Kind und der Entwicklung der emotionalen Bindung beschäftigt. Ihnen haben wir die Erkenntnisse bezüglich der Auswirkungen einer lang andauernden Trennung des Säuglings von der Mutter auf seine motorische, intellektuelle und seelische Entwicklung zu verdanken (Klaus, M. H.; Kenell, J. H., 1983, S. 17). Zudem ist es ihnen gelungen, die Entwicklung dieser Mutter-Kind-Bindung zu beschreiben und die sie störenden und fördernden Faktoren zu benennen.
