Biochemical and Structural Dynamics of the Cell Nucleus is a collection of papers dealing with the biology of the cell nucleus. The collection describes the methods used in isolating and defining the chemistry and functional interactions of the nuclear components. Some papers also discuss the diversity of the roles that these components play in regulating cellular phenotypes, differentiation, and proliferation. One paper discusses the possible role for lamin A in muscle differentiations, where due to its presence and the appearance of A-type lamins during the differentiation of a number of cell types, lamin A or any of its isoelectric variants cannot specifically be responsible for the induction of muscle specific gene expression. The work of Loewinger and McKeon (1988) can show evidence of the role for lamin A in the differential expression of muscle-specific genes during the process of myogenesis if the investigator uses an alternative method. Several papers also discuss the dynamics of assembly and disassembly of the nuclear lamina and envelope, DNA- and RNA-binding proteins, as well as the nucleocytoplasmic transport. The collection can prove valuable to biochemists, cellular biologists, microbiologists, and molecular biologists.

This book is about the role of calcium and calmodulin in the cell nucleus. Calcium, which is an important second messenger of signal transduction pathways, can also operate in the cell nucleus. Different calcium binding proteins, which are the targets of cellular calcium, have been identified in the nucleus of many different cell types. Prominent among these calcium binding proteins is calmodulin, which appears to be involved in the regulation of major nuclear functions such as gene expression and DNA replication.

A role for vitamin A in living organisms has been known throughout human history. In the last 100 years, the biochemical nature of vitamin A and its active derivative, retinoic acid, its physiological impact on growth processes and the essential details of its mechanism of action have been revealed by investigations carried out by researchers using vertebrate and more recently invertebrate models to study a multiplicity of processes and conditions, encompassing embryogenesis, postnatal development to old age. A wealth of intercellular interactions, intracellular signaling systems and molecular mechanisms have been described and the overall conclusion is that retinoic acid is essential for life. This book series, with chapters authored by experts in every aspect of this complex field, unifies the knowledge base and mechanisms currently known in detailed, engaging, well-illustrated, focused chapters that synthesize information for each specific area. In view of the recent explosion in this field, it is timely to publish a contemporary, comprehensive, book series recapitulating the most exciting developments in the field and covering fundamental research in molecular mechanisms of vitamin A action, its role in physiology, development and continued well-being and the potential of vitamin A derivatives and synthetic mimetics to serve as therapeutic treatments for cancers and other debilitating human diseases. VOLUME I: Here, we present the first volume of a multi-volume series on Retinoic Acid Signaling that will cover all aspects of this broad and diverse field. One aim of Volume I is to present a compilation of topics related to the biochemistry of nuclear retinoic acid receptors, from their architecture when bound to DNA and associated with their coregulators to their ability to regulate target gene transcription. A second aim is to provide insight into recent advances that have been made in identifying novel targets and non-genomic effects of retinoic acid. Volume I is divided into ten chapters contributed by prominent experts in their respective fields. Each chapter starts with the history of the area of research. Then, the key findings that contributed to development of the field are described, followed by a detailed look at key findings and progress that are being made in current, ongoing research. Each chapter is concluded with a discussion of the relevance of the research and a perspective on missing pieces and lingering gaps that the author recommends will be important in defining future directions in vitamin A research.

The fourth and last volume of Chromosomal Nonhistone Proteins sequence attempts to confront these macromolecules with the major structural elements of the cell nucleus (with the exception of nucleosomes which will be treated separately in a later treatise). Proteins of the chromosomes, nucleoli, nuclear membrane, RNP particles, and nuclear matrix are described in detail.

Plant Biochemistry provides students and researchers in plant sciences with a concise general account of plant biochemistry. The edited format allows recognized experts in plant biochemistry to contribute chapters on their special topics. Up-to-date surveys are divided into four sections: the cell, primary metabolism, special metabolism, and the plant and the environment. There is a strong emphasis on plant metabolism as well as enzymological, methodological, molecular, biological, functional, and regulatory aspects of plant biochemistry. Illustrations of metabolic pathways are used extensively, and further reading lists are also included. The coverage of the subject is divided into four sections - The plant cell-describing both molecular components and function - Primary metabolism-including the pathways of carbohydrate, lipid, nitrogen, nucleic acid and protein metabolism as well as gene regulation - Special metabolism-chapters on phenolics, isoprenoids and secondary nitrogen compounds - The plant and the environment-discussions of pathology, ecology and biotechnology at the molecular level
