Atomic biology has come of age. Interest in the role of chemical elements in life processes has captured the imagination of a wide spectrum of research scientists-ranging from the nutritionist to the biochemist, the inorganic chemist, and even to some biophysicists. This series, Biochemistry of the Elements, is a recognition of this increasing interest. When complete, the books will assemble the hard facts concerning the biochemistry of each element-singly or in a logical grouping. The series will provide a permanent reference for this active and growing field. Each volume shall represent an integrated effort by one or several authors to describe the current knowledge of an element(s) or the methods by which it is studied. Iron is the only element to which we have devoted two volumes, because its biological and chemical role is so versatile and complex. These two volumes will treat the two main structural categories of iron: heme and nonheme iron. In this volume on nonheme iron, the first in the series, Anatoly Bezkorovainy provides what we believe is the most comprehensive treatment of this important topic.

Microbial Iron Metabolism: A Comprehensive Treatise provides a comprehensive treatment of microbial iron metabolism. It aims to contribute to an increased understanding of the path of iron in microbial species and, eventually, in the plant and animal. The book is organized into five parts. Part I describes some features of iron and its function in the microbial world. These include a historical sketch of the recognition of the importance of iron in cellular physiology; a description of certain physical properties of ferrous and ferric ions; and a list of various known biocoordination derivatives grouped by ligand atom. Metabolism under iron-limited conditions is also examined. Part II presents studies on iron transport, biosynthesis, and storage in microorganisms. Part III examines iron enzymes and proteins, including ferredoxin, rubredoxin, nitrogenase, and hydrogenase. Part IV deals with reactions of inorganic substrates. Part V presents a study on the role of bacterial iron metabolism in infection and immunity.

Iron Deficiency Brain Biochemistry And Behavior written by Ernesto Pollitt and has been published by Raven Press (ID) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1982 with Medical categories.

Abstract: Conference papers are presented for nutrition scientists which emphasize the reciprocal interaction of the investigator's experimental interest (e.g., cardiovascular physiology, behavior) and the choice of the appropriate independent variable whereby nutritional status is to be defined. The material is covered under 3 sections. The 1st deals with the role of metals, in general, and iron, specifically, in nervous system metabolism. Sufficiently detailed knowledge of these pathways should allow for predictions of the types of behavioral and affective changes that might accompany iron deficiency. The 2nd section addresses the critical issue of how the independent variable, iron status) should be defined. The last section includes descriptions of the most recent studies on the functional effects of iron deficiency in animals and humans. Examination of the types of functional deficits permit delineation of possible biochemical mechanisms whereby iron status might influence behavior. (wz).

An Fe- and Cu-Protein Symposium was held on December 15-18, 1975 at the East West Center-University of Hawaii and was sponsored by the United States-Japan Cooperative Science Program under the auspices of the National Science Foundation and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. It was recognized by the organizers of the symposium that metalloproteins are very important in the field of health science and a subject worthy of discussion by experts from the United States, Japan and Europe. The meeting was restricted to Fe- and Cu-proteins but this is still a very broad subject matter and therefore, selected topics of current interest in this field were chosen. This book contains the collected papers from most of the symposium participants. The subject matter covered in this book is divided into four parts. These are: 1) the iron-sulfur proteins (which are not a part of the mitochondrial electron transport system); 2) the iron-sulfur proteins and heme proteins of the mitochondrial electron transport system; 3) other heme and nonheme iron proteins; and 5) selected copper proteins. The organizers of the symposium wish to express their gratitude to the participants, the session chairmen, and Drs. I.C. Gunsalus and E. Frieden who assisted in the organization of the symposium.

Iron is of fundamental importance for the growth, development and well being of almost all living organisms. Multiple biological systems have been developed for the uptake, utilisation, storage and homeostasis of iron in microbes, plants and mammals. e.g. Both iron deficiency and iron overload are found extensively in man: the intimate links between iron and oxidative stress are associated with a wide range of pathologies; iron has a well established role in infections by a wide range of microorganisms and parasites; there is a close link between iron requirements and cellular division with implications for cancers and other metals such as copper and zinc are closely linked with iron metabolism. The first edition of this book was published in 1991. Since then the extensive impact of molecular cell biology on the field of iron biochemistry has opened new horizons in our understanding of the transport and storage of iron and of its homeostasis. The explosive use of molecular biological techniques applied to cellular biology of iron metabolism has resulted in a rapid expansion in the literature which has led to the need for this second edition. This second edition also: Introduces many illustrations and colour photos to make the basic concepts far clearer Includes new chapters on iron and cell division and interactions of iron with other metals - particularly copper and zinc Provides additional anecdotes Incorporates an extensive and up-to-date bibliography
