Ecological biochemistry concerns the biochemistry of interactions between animals, plants and the environment, and includes such diverse subjects as plant adaptations to soil pollutants and the effects of plant toxins on herbivores. The intriguing dependence of the Monarch butterfly on its host plants is chosen as an example of plant-animal coevolution in action. The ability to isolate trace amounts of a substance from plant tissues has led to a wealth of new research, and the fourth edition of this well-known text has consequently been extensively revised. New sections have been provided on the cost of chemical defence and on the release of predator-attracting volatiles from plants. New information has been included on cyanogenesis, the protective role of tannins in plants and the phenomenon of induced defence in plant leaves following herbivory. Advanced level students and research workers aloke will find much of value in this comprehensive text, written by an acknowledged expert on this fascinating subject. - The book covers the biochemistry of interactions between animals, plants and the environment, and includes such diverse subjects as plant adaptations to soil pollutants and the effects of plant toxins on herbivores - The intriguing dependence of the Monarch butterfly on its host plants is chosen as an example of plant-animal coevolution in action - New sections have been added on the cost of chemical defence and on the release of predators attracting volatiles from plants - New information has been included on cyanogenesis, the protective role of tannins in plants and the phenomenon of induced defence in plant leaves following herbivory

Selenium: Geobotany, Biochemistry, Toxicity, and Nutrition focuses on the properties, characteristics, reactions, applications, chemistry, and transformations of selenium. The book first offers information on the geological distribution of selenium, including the formation of seleniferous soils, chemical forms of selenium in soils, selenium in water, selenium on the sea floor and in sea water, and geobotany. The text then takes a look at selenium indicator in plants and accumulation of selenium by plants. Discussions focus on selenium accumulations in indicator plants; selenium accumulation in farm crops and native grasses; factors that influence selenium accumulation in plants; and identification of indicators by germination tests. The manuscript elaborates on selenium poisoning in animals and prevention and control of selenium poisoning. Acute selenium poisoning, chronic selenium poisoning by inorganic selenium, and recognition of poisonous range plants are also discussed. The text also examines selenium in nutrition and the chemistry of selenium. The publication is a valuable source of data for readers interested in the study of selenium.

As discussed in this book, a large body of evidence indicates that selenium is a cancer chemopreventive agent. Further evidence points to a role of this element in reducing viral expression, in preventing heart disease, and other cardiovascular and muscle disorders, and in delaying the progression of AIDS in HIV infected patients. Selenium may also have a role in mammalian development, in male fertility, in immune function and in slowing the aging process. The mechanism by which selenium exerts its beneficial effects on health may be through selenium-containing proteins. Selenium is incorporated into protein as the amino acid selenocysteine. Selenocysteine utilizes a specific tRNA, a specific elongation factor, a specific set of signals, and the codeword, UGA, for its cotranslational insertion into protein. It is indeed the 21st naturally occurring amino acid to be incorporated into protein and marks the first and only expansion of the genetic code since the code was deciphered in the mid 1960s.

The use of organoselenium reagents as catalysts is a common thread that runs through the chapters of this book, introducing important aspects of the modern organoselenium chemistry: organocatalysis, green chemistry, bioinspiration, antioxidant activity. The eBook covers the most recent developments in the classical synthetic application of organoselenium reagents such as electrophilic, nucleophilic and free radical reagents. The volume also features a discussion on the synthesis and the synthetic applications of some emerging classes of selenium compounds such as hypervalent selenium species and selenoamides, and also addresses some biological aspects such as the antimicrobial activity of organoselenium derivatives and the biochemistry of selenoproteins. A number of eminent scientists from different research groups were involved in the preparation of the 13 chapters of the book, making Organoselenium Chemistry: Between Synthesis and Biochemistry an excellent reference about selenium chemistry for researchers and graduate students in the field of selenium chemistry.

The remarkable development of molecular biology has had its counterpart in an impressive growth of a segment of biology that might be described as atomic biology. The past several decades have witnessed an explosive growth in our knowledge of the many elements that are essential for life and maintenance of plants and animals. These essential elements include the bulk elements (hydro gen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur), the macrominerals (sodium, potas sium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, and phosphorus), and the trace elements. This last group includes the ultra trace elements and iron, zinc, and copper. Only the ultratrace elements are featured in this book. Iron has attracted so much research that two volumes are devoted to this metal-The Biochemistry of Non-Heme Iron by A. Bezkoravainy, Plenum Press, 1980, and The Biochemistry of Heme Iron (in preparation). Copper and zinc are also represented by a separate volume in this series. The present volume begins with a discussion of essentiality as applied to the elements and a survey of the entire spectrum of possible required elements.

Many health benefits have been attributed to selenium that include preventing various forms of cancer (e.g., colon cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer and liver cancer), heart disease and other cardiovascular and muscle disorders, inhibiting viral expression, delaying the progression of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients, slowing the aging process, and having roles in mammalian development, including male reproduction and immune function. The purpose of the book is the same as the first two volumes which is to bring an up to date status of current research in the rapidly developing selenium field centered around the health benefits attributed to this element and how this element makes its way into protein.
