Biofilm hadir dimanapun di alam. Pembentukannya dapat terjadi baik pada permukaan biotik maupun abiotik. Biofilm didefinisikan sebagai sekumpulan dari mikroorganisme dari produk ekstraselular yang berasosiasi pada permukaannya. Pcmbentukan biofilm dipengaruhi oleh faktor pengontrol perlekatan sel, sifat alami permukaan, karakteristik media, serta karakteristik permukaan sel mikroba. Secara genetik kemampuan pembentukan biofilm diatur oleh operon ica ABDC. Siklus kehidupan pada biofilm meliputi perlekatan sel, pembentukan mikrokoloni, pembentukan biofilm serta pemantapan dan perluasan komunitas biofilm. Struktur biofilm terdiri dari mikroorganisme dan zat polimer ekstraseluler yang berstruktur. Bakteri pembentuk biofilm menunjukkan peningkatan resistensi terhadap antibiotik dan desinfektan serta resisten rerhadap proses fagositosis dan mekanisme lain dan sistem imun bawaan dan adaptif. Biofilm berperan dalam kasus keracunan makanan dan memengaruhi keamanan pangan. Biofilm telah diketahui terlibat dalam berbagai macam infeksi mikroba pada tubuh seperti infeksi saluran kemih, infeksi kateter, infeksi telinga tengah, pembentukan plak gigi yang berhubungan dengan patogenesis karies, gingivitis, periodontitis, endokarditis, dan infeksi pada cystic fibrosis. Buku ini membahas secara lengkap dan holistik pada tiap-tiap babnya mengenai biofilm yang dikaitkan dengan implikasinya secara klinis. Setelah membahas buku ini, mahasiswa dan praktisi kesehatan akan memiliki pemahaman yang komprehensif tentang biofilm dan karakteristiknya sehingga diharapkan akan memberikan rekomendasi preventif dan perawatan pada pasien untuk meminimalkan terjadinya infeksi yang persisten atau resistensi.
