The multidisciplinary field of bioinformatics blends aspects of biology and information technology with computer science, statistics, mathematics, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, and language. The study of using computers to create databases and algorithms that will enhance and speed up biological research is known as bioinformatics. The 1990s saw the emergence of the field known as bioinformatics. The subfield of bioinformatics is primarily concerned with data related to the sequences of biological molecules, such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. Bioinformatics research heavily relies on data storage, retrieval, and analysis techniques. Different definitions of the field of bioinformatics have been put forth by different scientists and organizations. According to Fred Tekamah, bioinformatics is the way to go when it comes to using DNA and amino acid sequences and related information to solve biological problems. Bioinformatics: What is it? According to the National Centre for Biotechnology Information, it is "the field of science in which biology, computer science, and information technology merge into a single discipline," The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as follows: "Bioinformatics is conceptualizing biology in terms of molecules (in the sense of Physical chemistry) and applying informatics techniques (derived from disciplines such as applied math’s, computer science, and statistics) to understand and organize the information associated with these molecules, on a large scale. Interchangeably. The practical development of tools for data management and analysis, such as sequence analysis and genome information presentation, is the focus of bioinformatics. The application of algorithmic techniques to biological studies is the focus of computational biology. The group of systems that support life, such as information management systems, communication networks, and analysis tools, is known as bioinformation infrastructure.

This book helps decision makers grasp the importance, and applicability to business, of the new technologies and extended connectivity of systems that underlie what is becoming known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution: technologies and systems such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, 3D printing, the internet of things, virtual and augmented reality, big data and mobile networks. The WEF, OECD and UN all agree that humanity is on the cusp of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. As intelligent systems become integrated into every aspect of our lives this revolution will induce cultural and societal change of a magnitude hitherto unforeseen. These technologies challenge the values, customer experience and business propositions that have been the mainstay of almost every business and organization in existence. By redefining and encapsulating new value structures with emerging intelligent technologies, new innovative models are being created, and brought to market. Understanding the potential and impact of these changes will be a fundamental leadership requirement over the coming years. Skilton and Hovsepian provide decision makers with practical, independent and authoritative guidance to help them prepare for the changes we are all likely to witness due to the rapid convergence of technological advances. In short, bite-sized, nuggets, with frameworks supported by a deep set of practical and up-to-the-minute case studies, they shine light on the new business models and enterprise architectures emerging as businesses seek to build strategies to thrive within this brave new world.
