The dearest friend of Lupe Solana's beloved "Papi," Ramón Suarez was the owner of a prosperous sugar mill back in Cuba until Castro forced him into exile. Now an unnamed Spanish source wants to purchase the confiscated property at a fraction of its true value. Suarez wants the sexy, smart, hot-tempered South Florida P.I. to find out why, but Ramon's lazy, no-good nephew Alexander just wants to take the money and run. Then Alexander is found brutally slain in a sleazy Miami hotel -- his last known visitor, Tío Ramón, accused of murder. Lupe's routine journey down a paper trail now turns into something darker and more twisted, entangling her in a mysterious web of spun sugar and blood that will bring bullets smashing through her window and death to her door.

"This book is about Jock Campbell's role in the shaping of British Guiana (Guyana) towards the end of the empire. Campbell, the head of the Booker Company which owned most of the sugar plantations in colonial Guyana, was a reformer whose Fabian socialist beliefs drove him to secure major benefits for sugar workers, in the 1950s-60s." "Clem Seecharan explores the interplay between Campbell's programme of reforms and the doctrinaire Marxism of Guyana's charismatic politician Cheddi Jagan." "Sweetening 'Bitter Sugar' is part biography, part history and politics. It also encompasses ethnicity, trade unionism, agricultural and technological innovation, and health, housing and social welfare reforms. It is a study in modern Caribbean historiography."--BOOK JACKET.

Diabetes?a hereditary disease?can affect families over many generations. Occurrences can often be compounded by unhealthy dietary and lifestyle choices. In this first part of this book, I have described the struggles I have faced with diabetes in my family. Both my grandfathers, and my father, were diagnosed with diabetes before I was even a year old. The disease spans at least two generations in my family, maybe more. Through research into the prevalence, symptoms and preventative measures relevant to the disease, I hope to prevent the continuation of this cycle. I conducted survey-based research to discern the prevalence of diabetes and discuss implications, comparing my own data to data obtained from the CDC to determine validity. Lastly, I provided ways of identifying the disease through common symptoms, as an early diagnosis can make regulation easier, and provided habits that are conducive to the prevention of diabetes.
