Since the 1976, increased attention has been paid to the diminishing numbers of Black males in higher education, and rightly so: the total numerical enrollments of Black female undergraduates has outstripped their male counterparts by a factor of nearly 2 to 1. Since intervention, however, the enrollment growth rate among Black males (60 per cent) exceeded that of Black females (40 per cent) (NCES, 2008). Needless to say, this good news was is welcomed by many. However, as Cole & Guy-Sheftall (2003) have pointed out, it may be misguided to assume that improving the status of black men will single-handedly solve all the complex problems facing African American communities. Are we indirectly neglecting Black females? And what of their future? The purpose of "Black Female Undergraduates on Campus" is to identify both successes and challenges faced by Black female students accessing and matriculating through institutions of higher education. In illuminating the interactive complexities between persons and place, this volume is aimed toward garnering an understanding of the educational trajectories and experiences of Black females, independent of and in comparison to their peers. Special attention is paid to women pursuing careers in the high demand fields of teacher education and STEM.

More than identity politics, intersectionality regards the inability of institutional structures to remedy discrimination because of the intersection between social dynamics which are often discretely conceived. (Crenshaw & Dill, 2009). This book focuses on the subpopulation of Black female college students.

This book reports findings from the National Study of Black College Students, a comprehensive study of Black college students’ characteristics, experiences, and achievements as related to student background, institutional context, and interpersonal relationships. Over 4,000 undergraduates and graduate/professional students on sixteen campuses (eight historically Black and eight predominantly White) participated in this mail survey. Using these and other data, this book systematically examines the current state of Black students in U.S. higher education. Until now, our understanding has been limited by inadequate data, misguided theories, and failure to properly interpret the Black American reality. This volume challenges our assumptions and contributes to the growing body of knowledge about Black student experiences and outcomes in higher education.

This book documents the academic and social success of Black women undergraduates as they negotiate dominant educational and social discourses about their schooling lives. Starting with the premise that Black women undergraduates are not a homogenous group and that they are being successful in college in greater numbers than Black men, this book examines the ways they navigate being traditionally underprepared academically for college, the discourse of «acting white», and oppressive classroom settings and practices. This work expands the theoretical concept of cultural capital by identifying the abundant and varied forms of cultural capital that Black women undergraduates provide, develop, and utilize as they make their way through college. The discussion of their raced, classed, and gendered experiences challenges the academy to make use of this understanding in its work towards educational equity. This movement has wide-reaching implications for ethos, policy, and practice in higher education.

African American Females written by Eboni M. Zamani-Gallaher and has been published by MSU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-01 with Social Science categories.

African American Females: Addressing Challenges and Nurturing the Future illustrates that across education, health, and other areas of social life, opportunities are stratified along gender as well as race lines. The unequal distribution of wealth, power, and privilege between men and women intersects with race and class to create multiple levels of disadvantage. This book is one result of a unique forum intended to bring into focus the K–12 and postsecondary schooling issues and challenges affecting African American girls and women. Focusing on the historical antecedents of African American female participation and the contemporary context of access and opportunity for black girls and women, the contributors to this collection pay particular attention to the interaction of gender with race/ethnicity, class, age, and health, with the central aim of encouraging thoughtful reading, critical thinking, and informed conversations about the necessity of exploring the lives of African American females. Additionally, the book frames important implications for recommended changes in policy and practice regarding a number of critical matters presently affecting African American females in schools and communities across the state of Michigan and nationwide.
