A SWOT analysis is a commonly used assessment tool that can inform strategic decisions. This case uses the situation at BlackBerry Limited (formerly known as RIM) to highlight how to perform a comprehensive SWOT analysis and use the results to make strategic decisions to keep abreast of changing industry factors. These questions are answered in the context of BlackBerrys experience, as BlackBerry employee, Jamal Obu, compiles a SWOT and analyzes it to guide strategic planning and help the company regain its market share.

Without a significant management and strategy change, Blackberry will not be able to regain old power and to lose its current image of being untrendy and out-of-date. Having examined in detail the causes of Blackberry’s downfall of popularity, this report aims to show opportunities for RIM to increase market share again by adopting and implementing a different brand positioning strategy.

You’ll find full chapters outlining effective analysis processes; avoiding pitfalls; communicating results; as well as drill-downs on analyzing industries, competitive positioning, business models, supply chains, strategic relationships, corporate reputation, critical success factors, driving forces, technology change, cash flow, and much more. For every method, Fleisher and Bensoussan present clear descriptions, background context, strategic rationales, strengths, weaknesses, step-by-step instructions, and references. The result is a book every analyst, strategist, and manager can rely on – in any industry, for any challenge.
